Michael Ray
Shingleton
June 24, 1949 – December 12, 2023
Michael Ray Shingleton, 74, went to be with his Lord and Savior Tuesday, December 12, 2023.
Michael was born on June 24, 1949, in Oklahoma City, OK, the first of three sons born to Jo Anne (Wells) Shingleton and Bill Shingleton. Michael spent his early years attending Exchange Avenue Baptist Church, where his mother was the pianist, and his father led the music. He was at church twice every Sunday and every Wednesday night throughout his childhood. He even missed the debut of the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show because he was at church that Sunday night. Family vacations were spent taking choir trips traveling across the nation, singing coast to coast with performances in Mexico, Canada, the Bahamas, and the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Michael graduated from Capitol Hill High School in 1967 and Oklahoma State University in 1971 with a degree in advertising. He left Oklahoma after graduation for Houston, Texas, where he took a management training position at Foley's Department Store in Downtown Houston. He quickly became known as the Leisure Suit King, which was the trend at that time, working in the men's department.
As a young retail executive, Michael worked for Mervyn's in California, the House of Jeans in Austin, Texas, and Levi Strauss in both Dallas and Houston, Texas.
Michael met Kathy (Buzbee) Shingleton at Second Baptist Church in Houston, Texas in 1982 after each had been divorced and rededicated their life to their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Both were from strong Christian homes with entrepreneurial fathers and mothers who worked in the family business and stayed home. Michael and Kathy were married at Second Baptist in 1984 and remained in Houston/ Galveston until 2011. In addition to Michael's retail career, he was also responsible for bringing the cruise terminal to Galveston, Texas as the Cruise Director for the Port of Galveston. Besides traveling, Michael enjoyed real estate and worked as a realtor and a property manager. Michael retired in 2011 when he and Kathy relocated to Seattle, Washington, where Kathy took a position in the Virginia Mason Health System. While in Seattle (2011-2020), Michael's brother Keith was able to spend two months with them during many of the Pacific Northwest summers.
Michael and Kathy dedicated their lives to raising his two sons, Thad and Adam. They made their children a priority, dedicating every other weekend to them while growing up. They attended many Astros games at the Astrodome, had courtside seats for the Houston Rockets at The Summit, attended some legendary concerts, went on numerous fishing trips out of Galveston, and took annual trips to Cozumel, Mexico. They continued their travels, taking their sons and daughters-in-law, and six granddaughters on numerous family vacations.
Over the almost 40 years of marriage, Michael and Kathy experienced both the mountaintops and the valleys of life. Through it all, they have depended on their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who has been their strength, their guide, and their comfort.
Michael was preceded in death by his father, Bill, in 1987. And his mother, Jo Anne, in 2022. He is survived by his wife, Kathy, his sons Thad and wife Kelly, Adam and wife Lauren, and his two brothers, Keith and wife Linda, and Kent and wife Shawnah.
Grandchildren include Haley Carrero and husband Gabriel, Madison Shingleton, Campbell Shingleton, Olivia Shingleton, Amanda Shingleton, and Hanna Michael Shingleton.
Nieces and nephews include Bryan Shingleton, Simon Shingleton and wife Rachel, Carolyn Goldman, Jared Shingleton and wife Emily, Maci Shingleton, Molly Shingleton, and Sarah Frank.
