Obituary

Melvin Quinlin Jones (Mel), 92, of Georgetown, TX went home to be with the Lord on October 28, 2019.

Mel was born in Gause, TX on October 20, 1927 to Jesse Quinlan Jones and Mary Barker Jones.  He grew up in New Baden, TX and graduated from Franklin High School in 1945.  Mel studied at SW Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos before taking a job with the railroad.  During his time as a Telegrapher, he mastered Morse code.

Soon after, Mel met the love of his life, Una Irene Petty.  A mutual love of athletics and dancing brought them to the alter on December 15, 1950. They were wed in Una's home in Marquez, TX.

Mel and Una moved to Augusta, Georgia during Mel's service in the United States Army.  Mel served well, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Returning to Texas, Mel earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Sam Houston State Teachers College in 1957. Soon after graduation, Mel and Una moved to Pasadena, TX where he began his career with Enjay Chemical Company (Exxon) as a chemist. Although a gifted chemist, Mel's true talent lay in his ability to never meet a stranger.  Mel was a good friend to everyone he met, which led him to a career in sales.  Mel earned the Distinguished Salesman of the Year award from the Houston Salesman Association.

Mel and Una retired to Georgetown, TX in 1990 where they worshiped at First Baptist and Crestview Baptist Churches. They loved playing tennis and won many tournaments.  In addition, they both enjoyed camping, bird watching, genealogy, and square dancing. They pursued all these hobbies on multiple RV trips across the country.

Mel was physically fit and strong. However, strokes and seizures proved too much.  He left us too soon.

Mel is survived by his wife of 68 years, Una Irene Petty Jones, and their five children and families:

Son, Michael Jones and his family: Paula Jones, Matt Jones, Summer Jones, Michelle Jones Leal, Stacy Jones, Tony Jones, Davida Watkins, James Conlee, Paisley Jones, Gunner Jones, Riann Jones, Bryce Leal, Kinnley Leal.

Daughter, Gloria Jones and her family: Crystal Bott McKeon, Chris McKeon, Shaun Bott, Allison McKeon, Annabelle McKeon, Sofia Bott.

Daughter, Carolyn Jones Kerr and her family: Jim Kerr, Christina Kerr.

Son, Mark Jones and his family: Lisa Jones, Philip Jones, Ann Evans, Bethany Jones Kronberg, Victor Kronberg, Lindsey Jones and Barrett Jones.

and cousins, nephews and nieces.

Mel laughed easily and loved fully. When a cheerful moment hit, he would break out in song.  Mel was devoted to his wife Una and to his family.  Mel always had a smile for the children.  We love you.  Till we meet again.
