Nov 14, 1930 — Jan 22, 2021
John William Wood, Sr. MSGT, USAF (Ret), 90, of Georgetown, Texas peacefully passed away
on January 22, 2021. John William Wood, Sr. was born to William H. Wood and Luella (Shannon) Wood on November
14, 1930 in Cleveland, Ohio. John married his beloved wife Barbara Jean (Stewart) Wood in
Brownwood, Texas on July 31, 1954.
After graduating from Collinwood HS in June 1950, John began a remarkable journey in the US
Air Force when he enlisted on July 24, 1950, the beginning of the Korean war. During his career
as a member of the USAF Security Forces he was stationed at McChord AFB Washington,
Korea, France, Germany, Thailand, Vietnam, and Bergstrom AFB in Austin. He was decorated
with many awards for his service throughout his career including the AFCOM 3 OLC. After
retiring from the USAF in August of 1970, John finished out his professional years by working
for the Texas Commission for the Blind in Austin until retiring in 1990.
After their retirement, John and Barbara moved to Sun City Texas in 1997. It was here that
John stayed active with the tennis club, the RV Club, the Republican Club and numerous other
community boards. As a Christian, John was a member of The Worship Place in Sun City and
worked many Sundays serving the congregation.
One of John's proudest journeys within his retirement included being part of the Sun City
Veterans Memorial Advisory Group that brought the Veterans Memorial Plaza to life in 2003 for
Williamson County, Texas. It is a place that not only honors Veterans but memorializes those
that gave their life in combat defending our country's freedom.
John also stayed very involved with the Air Force Security Police Association and was a
member of the Retiree Advisory Council at Ft. Hood. In 2015, he was selected to be a part of
the Honor Flight for Korean War Veterans to Washington, D.C. Along with his wife, Barbara,
John had a love for travel that included European adventures and wandering North America in
their RV. During his retirement John found a passion for playing tennis and served as a United
States Tennis Umpire and Referee for ten years. John had a calling throughout his life for
serving others and did so in anything he became involved with. John will be dearly missed by
his family and friends.
John is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 64 years, their son John Wood Jr., and
brother James B. Wood.
