John's Obituary

U.S. Veteran  

John F. Oppie was born in Fort Worth, Texas to Mamie Dean Oppie and Anthony Alexander Oppie on June 19, 1932. He graduated from St. Ignatius Academy and Laneri High School in Fort Worth. John then attended the University of St. Thomas in Houston before attending Assumption Seminary in San Antonio. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in January 1954.

During his three years of military service (January 1954 – January 1957) he graduated from OCS as a 2nd Lt and lived in Ft. Riley, Kansas, as well as Erlangen, Germany.

In February 1955, he married Lillie Marie Marik at St. Patrick’s Church in Fort Worth. After his military duty ended, they moved to Austin where he attended the University of Texas and earned his BA and MBA. He worked for the oil industry for three years in both Louisiana and Oklahoma before joining General Dynamics in Fort Worth. John had a 32 year career with General Dynamics until his retirement in 1993.

To cherish his memory, John leaves behind his wife, Lil; daughter, Jan Oppie and husband Zo Hamada of Japan; son, Tony Oppie of Austin; daughter, Susan Oppie of Honolulu, Hawaii; daughter, Patrice Clement and husband Rickey of Tennessee; and his grandchildren: Shuzo Hamada, Arianna and Drake Clement.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Virginia; brother, Joseph; sister-in-law, Mae Oppie; sister, Julia Naugle and brother-in-law, Bill Naugle.

A time of visitation will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 12, 2019 at St. Helen Catholic Church in Georgetown, Texas. The Recitation of the Rosary will follow the visitation at 9:30 a.m. with the Funeral Mass to begin at 10:00 a.m. Following the Mass, a Reception will be held at St. Rita Hall on the St. Helen Campus.

A private family burial will be held at Central Texas State Veteran Cemetery with Military Honors.
