Obituary

E. R. Simmons passed away on October 23, 2021 at the age of 102.  He was born January 3, 1919, to Ernest R. Simmons, Sr. and Hattie McWhirter Simmons in San Antonio, Texas.

E. R. married Fay Griffith Simmons, the love of his life, on October 29, 1942.

He was a proud WWII veteran and selflessly served our county in the United States Army in the European theater.

He earned his bachelor's degree summa cum laude from Texas A&I University. He then continued his education at the University of Iowa, earning his masters and doctorate degrees. E. R. was a Psychologist in the Central Texas area until his retirement in 2008.  He was the founder of the Gifted Students Foundation.

E. R. was a long-time minister with the Church of Christ, officiating countless weddings and funerals. People knew they could count on E. R., no matter the circumstances surrounding their lives, he was an instrument of Christ's Love.

He was an avid Longhorn fan and he made sure to keep the Longhorn Channel on all day for the last few years of his life. He also loved golf and tennis. Occasionally, he would take a break from the Longhorn Channel to root for golfer, Jordan Spieth, a Longhorn. When he was much younger, he loved to play church league softball, and was a lifelong golfer and tennis player.

He loved root beer, Pepsi, and Mexican food. His favorite foods were enchiladas and chocolate. The last thing he asked for was enchiladas.

He was a devoted family man who cherished his time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He passed just six days before celebrating their 79th wedding anniversary.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, four sisters, and his infant baby daughter.

E. R. Simmons leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 79 years, Fay Griffith Simmons of Georgetown, Texas; daughter, Sherry Thomas of Georgetown, Texas; three sons: Ernest R. Simmons III, Gary Robert Simmons, both of Georgetown, Texas, and John Knopp of Houston, Texas; five granddaughters; seven grandsons; and seven great-grandchildren.
