Charles Hugh Steger, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at the age of 86.
Born on July 11, 1939, in San Antonio, Texas, to Lenora Haag Steger and Lloyd O. Steger, Charlie lived a life defined by hard work, service, and devotion to his family, church, and community.
On November 15, 1958, he married Jodie Magness, in Rockdale, Texas. They were childhood sweethearts who went on to share 68 years of marriage - a partnership filled with laughter, perseverance, and fishing.
He attended McCallum High School in Austin before earning a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin. He served in the Texas National Guard from 1956 to 1962, including a period of active duty in 1962. He began his professional career with Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation in New York and later worked for Texas Utilities Company in Dallas.
In 1972, with determination and an entrepreneurial spirit, Charlie left Texas Utilities to pursue his own path. He purchased a machine shop in Georgetown, Texas, to support his young family while building what would become a thriving engineering and surveying business. He started that business on the back porch of his home on Olive Street.
Charlie soon reconnected with Don Bizzell, a college friend and study partner, to form Steger & Bizzell Engineering. They soon outgrew the back porch and moved to real offices on Austin Avenue
A man deeply committed to his community, Charlie gave generously of his time and leadership. His many roles included school board president, chamber of commerce president, first Caring Place president, United Way director, organizing board of the Williamson County Crisis Center, Lions Club president, Northwest Williamson County Unit of the American Cancer Society president. He contributed to numerous civic and charitable organizations, including Georgetown Health Foundation and GISD PALS program. Charlie and Jodie were charter members of Main Street Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and trustee from its inception.
More than any title or accomplishment, Charlie was most proud of his family. He and Jodie were privileged to raise their children on Olive Street in Old Georgetown. He enthusiastically attended every extracurricular event of his children and grandchildren. Great grandchildren were a wonderful bonus in later life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lenora Haag Steger and Lloyd Ousley Steger, and his favorite sister, Gayle Cokendolpher, and sister-in-law Nell Steger.
He is survived by his wife, Jodie Magness Steger; son, Perry Charles Steger and wife, Mary, of Georgetown; daughter, Holly Stevens and husband, P.J., of Georgetown; grandchildren, Elizabeth Hayes and husband, Patrick, of Austin; Benjamin Steger and wife, Corinne, of Austin; Charles Austin Stevens and wife, Maddy, of Austin; and Eliza McCanles and husband, Brady, of Dallas; and great-grandchildren, Bennett Hayes, Caroline Hayes, Quinn Steger, and Kelly Steger; brother, Lloyd Steger, of Taylor; and sister- and brother-in-law Rita and Dan Hull of Austin.
The family deeply appreciates the tireless, dedicated service of Jessica Davis, the caregiver and patient advocate who helped Charlie and the family in his last months.
Charlie lived a life rooted in faith, family, and quiet generosity. He left a legacy that will endure for generations.
A Celebration of Life will be held on May 16, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Main Street Baptist Church, 1001 S. Main Street, Georgetown, Texas, with a reception to follow in the church’s fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Caring Place (https://www.caringplacetx.org/) and Main Street Baptist Church Building Fund (https://msbchurch.com).
