Obituary

Dr. Uta C. Merzbach died suddenly on June 27, 2017, at her home in Georgetown. She was born in Berlin, Germany, on February 9, 1933, the daughter of Margarete K. and Ludwig H. Merzbach. The family arrived in the United States in May 1946 and shortly thereafter settled in Georgetown. Her mother initially taught at Southwestern University, and her father later became a professor of economics there. She studied mathematics at the University of Texas, taught for a short time at Radford School in El Paso, and studied at Harvard. She received a Ph.D. in mathematics and the history of science from Harvard (Radcliffe College) in 1965. From 1964 until 1988 she was Associate Curator and then Curator in the Division of Physical Sciences and Mathematics at what became the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History. She was the author of a number of publications in the history of mathematics and of science. Although she resided at various times in Washington, D.C., and in Essex, Massachusetts, she always considered Georgetown home where she was a member of Preservation Georgetown,  a member of First United Methodist Church, and an active member of the Williamson County Democratic Party.
