William Dean Wenthe, 85, passed away on September 25, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas.
He was born on October 28, 1938, in Sylvan Grove, Kansas, to Henry Albert Wenthe and Ella Magdalena Haesemeyer Wenthe. He was one of 14 children.
William graduated from high school in Sylvan Grove, Kansas, and continued his education at Concordia Junior College in Winfield, Kansas, and Concordia College in Seward, Nebraska. He was a teacher for over 40 years at many different schools including Immanuel Lutheran in Houston, Texas, a teacher with students from third grade to sixth grade in one classroom, as well as the principal at Holy Cross Lutheran in Kerrville, Texas, a teacher and principal at St. Matthews Lutheran in Westfield, Texas, and a teacher at St. Paul Lutheran in Austin, Texas.
William met Helen Ruby Medack, a Lutheran School teacher at Bethany Lutheran in Houston, Texas. They were married on June 5, 1964. The couple had 2 children, William Wenthe Jr., and Bethany Wenthe Thoresen.
He taught Bible Class (the "Old Timers Class") for many years before he retired from teaching at St. Paul Lutheran in Austin, Texas. He loved to hunt deer in the Hill Country and fish for catfish in the Guadalupe River. Mr. Wenthe and his wife were supporters of University of Texas football, Lady's Basketball, and Texas Baseball. They were season ticket holders to all three.
William is survived by his spouse, Helen; son, William Wenthe Jr. and wife Tracy, of San Antonio; grandchildren, David William Wenthe, Seth Jacob Wenthe, and Leah Abigail Wenthe; daughter, Bethany Thoresen and husband Ken; his sister, Barbara Meitler; and sisters-in-law Marilyn Wenthe, wife of Oscar; Wilda Wenthe, wife of Robert; Marilou Wenthe, wife of Allen, and Viola Sherk, sister of Helen.
William is preceded in death by his parents, Ella and Henry A. Wenthe as well as siblings, Lawrence, Henry ("Hank") , Arelia, Marvin, Ora, Adeline, Leo, Oscar, Robert ("Bob" or "Red"), Allen ("Dick"), Doris, Glen and Barbara.
Memorial donations can be made in William's name to Zion Lutheran School Scholarship Fund, to help families who need financial assistance to attend a Christian education.
A time of Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 7th, 2024, at Zion Lutheran Church, 6101 FM 1105, Georgetown, TX. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m.
Mr. Wenthe will be laid to rest at Zion Lutheran Cemetery following the services.
