William "Bill"
Kelly, M.D.
January 20, 1937 – September 16, 2019
William L. "Bill" Kelly, M.D. of Georgetown, passed away on September 16, 2019.
A time of visitation & reception will be held on Tuesday, September 24, 2019, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Ramsey Funeral Home, 5600 Williams Drive, Georgetown, Texas 78633. The following day, Wednesday, September 25, 2019 at 10:00 a.m., full military honors will be rendered by the United States Army at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas on State Highway 195.
Bill was born on January 20, 1937 in St. Louis, Missouri to William and Leona (Hudgins) Kelly. He is pre-deceased by older brother Dale Kelly & survived by sister-in-law Gaye Kelly, younger sister Eileen Baum & her husband Don Baum.
A state-ranked tennis player in high school, Bill graduated from Beaumont High School early and went off to Wheaton College graduating with B.S. with Honors in Chemistry in 1958. After being accepted to two other medical schools, Bill accepted a 'spur-of-the-moment' invitation from several Wheaton classmates who were driving to Texas in a VW bus to apply at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He immediately fell in love with the green spaces of Texas and Baylor Med's educational philosophy. He graduated Baylor, did his residency/training in Houston and has been a true-Texan ever since! He was drafted into the United States Army for the Viet Nam build-up serving in the Medical Corps at Darnell Hospital at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas from 1966 to 1968 "delivering babies as fast as he could" every day. He said "every GI leaving for Viet Nam had a pregnant wife". He then practiced Obstetrics/Gynecology in Austin for 32 years, first with Gynics Associates, then solo practice for 10 years, and finally with Austin Regional Clinic for the last 12 years. He was a member of the Travis County Medical Society and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He loved his patients, they loved him and were sad when he retired at the end of 2000. His younger physician colleagues reportedly claimed their confidence level went up about 100% when Bill was in the operating room with them. They also loved his slightly off-color jokes.
Bill and first wife Lois were married 25 years and raised four beautiful daughters – Miriam, Anne, Rachel and Sarah, who had fun referring to themselves as 'Kelly Girls' (like the national employment agency by the same name) while growing up in Austin. They loved and adored their dad.
Later Bill married Cindy who had a daughter and son – Christina & Michael whom he accepted as his own. They also loved and adored their 'Bill'. Bill and Cindy were three weeks short of 30 years of marriage.
Between them they have 6 children, 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren (see below).
Bill and Cindy moved to Sun City, Georgetown in December 2000, where they have loved every moment of every day celebrating life and good times with their many friends for almost 19 years. They both fell in love with golf and were charter members of the 'Zoomers' group in 2001. Bill enjoyed membership in the computer club, the woodshop and his 'Doughboys' investment group.
Bill Kelly was kind and gentle, a very wise man who will be missed by many.
Donations may be made to The Worship Place, 811 Sun City Blvd., Georgetown, TX 78633 or Shriner's Hospital for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607.
