Una Irene
Petty Jones
November 23, 1929 – September 30, 2024
Una Irene Petty Jones 94, of Austin, TX went home to be with the Lord on September 30, 2024.
Una was born in Marquez, TX on November 23, 1929, to Finis Eric Petty and Vesta Fail Petty. She grew up on the family farm in the Long Hollow community, where they raised their own food and cooked it on a wood burning stove and did homework by the light of coal oil lamps. At the age of twelve, the family moved to the big city of Marquez. She graduated as valedictorian in 1947 from Marquez High School, where she played on the volleyball team and the softball team and won several softball tournaments as the starting pitcher. Una received a bachelor's degree from Sam Houston State University in 1951.
Una met the love of her life, Melvin Quinlin Jones while visiting home from college. A mutual love of athletics and dancing brought them to the altar on December 15, 1950. They were wed in Una's home in Marquez TX.
Una and Mel moved to Augusta Georgia during Mel's service in the army where their first child, Mike, was born.
After Mel's discharge they moved back to Texas for Mel to complete his degree, and Gloria and Carolyn were added to the family.
Soon after graduation, Una and Mel moved to Pasadena TX where Shirley and Mark were born. Una kept busy with 5 children and pursuing a teaching certificate in math.
She began teaching kindergarten in 1961. She also taught first grade and 7th grade math. She loved her students, and they loved her.
She retired to pursue her passion for tennis, and it paid off. Una and her partner Shirley Nathan were ranked #1 in Womens 55 Doubles for the state of Texas. She was also named Houston Ladies Tennis Association Lady of the Year.
Una and Mel retired to Georgetown TX in 1990 where they worshiped at First Baptist and Crestview Baptist Churches. They loved playing tennis and won many tournaments. They were also members of the Georgetown Natural History Club which sponsored many birding trips, the Round Rock Tennis Association and several square dance clubs. They were avid genealogists and researched their family roots doggedly. They pursued all these interests in their many RV trips around the country. Una was an active member of Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Daughters of the American Revolution, the Daughters of 1812 and the Georgetown Study Club. She was a voracious reader and was particularly pleased to have collected all the Agatha Christie books.
