Thomas Mark Mitchell, PhD, 89, passed away peacefully at home on April 27, 2026. Born December 16, 1936, in McAllen, Texas, he was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Tom had a successful career as a physical oceanographer, as well as author of the nonfiction book Winds, Waves, and Warriors. He was known for his kindness, intelligence, sparkling wit and love of dogs.
In 1967, Tom married Dottie Callanan, and they raised two daughters, Lynda and Margo. He cherished spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and will be remembered for his warmth, generosity, and sense of humor. Tom’s love of fixing things and general handiness earned him the moniker of “Bunny Super Brain.”

Grandchildren: Evan, Mason & Simon Hunt, Elena, Anna, Laura & James Schoenstein
Nieces, nephews, cousins, as well as a host of devoted relatives and friends.
Preceded in death by parents Mark and Eleanor Mitchell, and sister Eleanor Ann Yount.
A time of visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6th, 2026 in the Chapel of Ramsey Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. The family invites you to join them for a reception immediately following the service in the Reception Hall of Ramsey Funeral Home.
Mr. Mitchell will be laid to rest at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 7th, 2026 at the Central Texas State Veteran Cemetery with Full Military Honors rendered by the United States Army.
