Sue Aileen
Powell
August 10, 1940 – May 15, 2025
Sue Ailene Winn was born on August 10, 1940, in Carlsbad, New Mexico, to Ed and Becky Winn. On May 15, 2025, at the age of 84, she peacefully entered her eternal home in Georgetown, Texas. After a long and courageous journey with Alzheimer's, Sue is now fully restored—free, whole, and able once again to remember and rejoice in the many blessings of her life.
Sue grew up in Carlsbad, where she was an active member of the Fox & Lake Church of Christ and found joy performing in school plays at Carlsbad High School. It was there she became friends with Jim Osborn, a friendship that blossomed into love while they were both attending Abilene Christian College. They married on July 3, 1959, beginning a beautiful partnership that would span nearly five decades.
Together, Sue and Jim raised two children, Mike and Cammy, and Sue found immense pride and joy in their lives. Her deepest source of pride, however, was their shared faith and commitment to walking with Jesus. The loss of her beloved son Mike to cancer in 2002 was one of the greatest sorrows of her life, a pain she bore with strength and unshakable faith.
In 1967, Sue and Jim joined a movement of families from ACC known as the "Megalopolis Exodus," relocating to Newark, Delaware, to help plant and grow churches of Christ in the Northeast. For six years, they poured their hearts into ministry before returning to Carlsbad in 1973. Their shared passion for building strong marriages led them to serve in the Marriage Encounter program, including two years as the national President couple. They facilitated retreats across the United States, Canada, and Germany, touching countless lives with their wisdom, humor, and unwavering commitment to love.
Over the years, Sue and Jim made their home in several New Mexico cities—including Carlsbad, Albuquerque and Las Cruces—always forming deep, lasting connections with church families and friends. After Jim's passing in 2005, Sue moved to Round Rock, Texas, to be near her daughter. In true Sue fashion, she reached out to others, co-founding a widows' group with her best friend Peggy. Together, they organized support networks and monthly gatherings, ensuring no one walked through grief alone.
In 2010, Sue became a member of the Georgetown Church of Christ, there she rekindled a long-standing friendship with Bill Powell and his wife Barbara. After Barbara's death, Sue and Bill attended the National Day of Prayer service together and began seeing more and more of each other.
Their companionship grew into something beautiful, and they were married on September 10, 2011 (9/10/11)—a date they joked would be easy to remember. For the next 13½ years, Sue and Bill shared a life full of travel, ministry, laughter, and deep love.
Sue was a beloved grandmother to six and a great-grandmother to thirteen. White Sands was a favorite adventure spot, but her kitchen was often the heart of the memories, especially when baking "Granma's Sugar Cookies." Each grandchild was convinced they were her favorite—until they eventually discovered that all of them were. Her legacy of warmth, generosity, and humor lives on in each of them.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Jim; her son, Mike; her brother-in-law Preston Harper; and brother-in-law John (Dubby) Osborn. She is survived by her devoted husband Bill; her daughter Cammy Hall and husband Philip; her daughter-in-law Patricia Osborn; her stepson Curtis Powell and Michelle Murray; her sister Marsha Harper; her brother-in-law Jerry Powell and wife Suzy; her sister-in-law Pam Cummings and husband Benny; her sister-in-law Pat Stamps and husband Gaylon; and her sister-in-law Geneva Osborn.
She is also survived by her grandchildren: Rebecca Osborn, John Osborn, Becky Puckett and husband Jon, James Osborn and wife Kelbye, David Hall and wife Krysta, Mark Hall and wife Audrey, Kip Powell and wife Amber, and Quincy Islas and husband Edson. Her great-grandchildren include Ivan Meyers, Emma Puckett, Don Powell, Raegan Osborn, Juliet Puckett, Brooke Puckett, Sam Osborn, Lois Hall, Olive Osborn, Odin Hall, Juno Hall, Olivia Hall, and Parker Hall. Many nieces and nephews treasure memories of holidays and time spent with Aunt Sue.
Sue's life was a testament to faith, love, and resilience. In her humorous and steadfast way, she left the world better than she found it, and all who knew her are richer for it.
The family would like to thank the memory care staff at The Delaney in Georgetown and Concho Hearts Hospice for their loving care in her final weeks.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Georgetown Church of Christ or Lifeline Chaplaincy in Sue's memory.
A memorial service will be held at 1pm on June 14th, 2025 at the Georgetown Church of Christ at 1525 West University Avenue, Georgetown, TX 78628.
