Obituary

Stayton Arlan Thompson passed peacefully at his home on January 12, 2022 at the age of 87.

Stayton was born in Manor, Texas on February 4, 1934, the third of five children. He graduated from Manor High School and was later drafted into the Army in December of 1956. He served 18 months in Germany with a honorable discharge in 1962.

Stayton married Shirley Floyd on September 7, 1956 in Austin, Texas. Stayton and Shirley were blessed with four children: Stacey, Sandra, Scott and Steve.

He worked 44 years for Austin Bridge and Road and retired at the age of 70.

Stayton and Shirley were active members of First Baptist Church Florence, where Stayton served as a deacon and a member of the Welcoming and Bereavement Committees. He was especially proud of being able to participate in the restoration of the church bell.

Stayton enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends. After retirement he never passed up an opportunity to play a hand of dominoes and could always be found "piddling and tinkering" on something.

Stayton was preceded in death by his parents, John Thompson and Mazie Thompson Koenig; sister, Billye Faye McAdoo; and brothers: Roy (Bubba), Donald (Sweetie), and John David.

Stayton is survived by his wife of 65 years Shirley; children and spouses: Stacey and Junior Herring, Sandra and Charlie Cobb, Scott and Brenda Thompson and Steve and Lisa Thompson; aunts: Vera Newton, Rosalee Menefee and Uncle Dee Menefee; nieces, nephews and spouses: Lynda and Jack Bonewald, Gaylen and Carl Tips, Becky and Steve Tripovich, Mike and Rhonda Wells, Angel Thompson, Julie and Mike Martin and Rusty and Joyce Young; as well as several generations of cousins and second cousins.

And now ... his pride and joy, his grandchildren and spouses along with his great grandchildren: Rikki and Brian, Kelly and Zach, Dane and Katie, Josh, Tyler, Tanner, Lil Stayton, Phil and Melanie, Bobby, Shasta and Michael, Ariel and Kevin and Skyler. His great grandchildren Lily, Baylee, Jaxon, Wren, Tanner, Emmy, Anna, Parker, Brice, Saige, Mabel and Millie.
