Shirley Nell Raney Fisher, a Georgetown native, passed away from complications of Alzheimer’s and dementia at the age of 91 on Sunday, April 26th, 2026, in the loving care of her family and the staff at Georgetown Nursing and Transitional Care.
Shirley was born on January 9th, 1935, in her family’s rural Georgetown home to Clyde Charles Raney and Ima Jean Whitehead-Raney. Her father, Clyde, was a well-known cotton farmer. At a young age, Shirley enjoyed spending her time riding on the tractor with him. She was a 1952 graduate of Georgetown High School. She remembered her principal, “Pop” Williams, well, and the sound of him rattling his keys in the hallways. On December 14th, 1956, Shirley married her devoted husband of 51 years, Fred Ozias Fisher of Florence, Texas. The couple then moved to Austin, Texas, where she worked as a clerk for the Department of Public Safety. In 1965, they adopted their daughter, Paula, at 8 days old, and in 1967, they adopted their son, Jay, at 7 days old. The family then relocated back to Georgetown in 1972, allowing Shirley to assist her dad in raising his finches and parakeets birds.
Shirley worked for Georgetown Independent School District, and later as a supervisor at Airborne, Tesco, and Weed Instruments, but her top priority was always her family. She loved them unconditionally and cherished every moment spent together. Her great-grandchildren called her GG, which she said stood for “Greatest Grandma.” She looked forward to the time she spent with them, playing games, baking roll-out cookies, and was dedicated to attending all of their events.
Another significant part of her life was her church. She was an active member at First Baptist Church of Georgetown for 53 years. She enjoyed traveling around the United States with Fred and her dear friends from her group. Many fellow members have wonderful memories of the pranks she would pull. She was known for being a prankster who loved life and everyone in it, often being referred to as “a hoot.” She regularly told fun stories that are still talked about to this day. Her playful spirit will live on, and she will be missed dearly.
Shirley was greeted in Heaven by her loving husband, Fred; parents, Clyde and Ima Raney; sister, Lela Mae Anderson Watt; brothers, Buster, Pete, and Tommy Raney; and granddaughter, Shay Thomas.
She is survived by her daughter, Paula Denise Thomas, and husband, Monty, of Georgetown, Texas; son, Jay Travis Fisher of Tucson, Arizona; grandchildren, Dalton Ray Thomas (Brook), Payton Leigh Thomas, Walker Ray Thomas, and Rainey Nicole Fox (Christopher); great-grandchildren, Dakoda Ray Thomas, Parker Ozias Thomas, and Ellie Jay Fox; also numerous friends and family members.
