Obituary

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Samuel Piñon Garcia, passed away peacefully at his home in Florence, Texas on December 3, 2024 at the age of 88.

Born in Deming, New Mexico, Samuel was one of three of the cherished sons of Natividad and Simona Garcia, both of whom preceded him in death. Samuel's older brother Robert, passed in 1991, while his younger brother Eddie still resides in Deming.

A proud patriot, Samuel joined the United States Marine Corps right after graduating high school and served his country with honor. On June 16, 1957, he married the love of his life, Bertha Gomez. Together, they built a beautiful family, raising five children Debra Ann, Samuel Jr, Kenneth, Katherine, and Christopher. Samuel worked tirelessly to provide for his family, dedicating over 30 years to the United States Postal Service, of which he retired as Postmaster in 1992. He contributed to his community in countless meaningful ways, from serving as member of the Deming City Council, to serving as the state level director of the New Mexico League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). His commitment to service and advocacy will leave a lasting impact on all who knew him.

Throughout his life, Samuel lived in California, New Mexico, and finally Texas, where he and  Bertha settled in 2016. Known affectionately by his family and friends as "Grumpy," Samuel was a jokester at heart, bringing, smiles, laughter, and joy to all those around him. His sense of humor and loving nature made him a cherished figure in the lives of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. In recent years, Samuel faced health challenges and was lovingly cared for by his devoted wife and family until his passing.

Samuel is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Bertha, his children Debra Loken (Steve), Samuel Jr (Janice), Kenneth (Sandra, deceased), Katherine Shamard (James) and Christopher (Stayce). He also leaves behind numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family members, and friends who will continue to honor his memory and legacy of laughter and joy. Samuel's life was a testament to love, laughter, service, and resilience. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
