With deep love and cherished memories, we celebrate the life of Roy Harold Zieschang, who passed away peacefully on Friday, May 8, 2026, at the age of 87.
Roy was born on November 27, 1938, in Bishop, Texas, to Alvin and Alma (Benovsky) Zieschang. Raised with the values of hard work, humility, and faith, Roy often shared stories of growing up on a farm, picking cotton, and even surviving a rattlesnake bite — stories that became legendary among family, friends, and even complete strangers lucky enough to meet him.
Roy graduated from Bishop High School, where he made his mark both on and off the field. A talented athlete, he set a Texas high school football record with six interceptions in a single game. Roy also proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959, including a stint in Death Valley. He went on to attend Texas A&I University, where he proudly became a Javelina and graduated in 1964.
On October 3, 1964, Roy married the love of his life, Carol Jean True, in Portland, Texas. Together they built a beautiful life filled with adventure, laughter, and deep devotion to their faith in God. Soon after, they moved to Southern California, where they raised their son, Dan, and daughter, Vonda.
Roy began his career with Unocal (Union 76 Oil Company) in 1965 and worked as a credit manager in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Schaumburg (Chicago). His work took him throughout California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii. In retirement, Roy and Carol settled in Georgetown, where they spent the last 32 years building a community they dearly loved.
His servant heart extended throughout the Georgetown community. Roy volunteered in prison ministry, faithfully made birthday and anniversary calls through Faith Lutheran Church, and warmly welcomed new visitors to the congregation. After retiring from Unocal, Roy spent 17 years working at HEB, where he found great joy greeting customers, offering prayers, and brightening people’s days.
One of Roy’s greatest legacies was his unwavering commitment to helping others. Sober since June 1986, Roy became a deeply devoted and active member of AA, where he supported and encouraged countless individuals over the past four decades. Many knew they could always find Roy at the 6 a.m. meeting at The White House. He invested his life in people — making others feel welcomed, known, valued, and loved.
To know Roy was to know kindness, laughter, and connection. He had an infectious laugh, a gift for storytelling, and never met a stranger. He loved soaking in the hot tub, taking his grandchildren to Kiddie Acres, and going on long drives with those he loved most. Roy was also a passionate sports fanatic whose love for Texas teams ran deep.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Carl and Alvin Jr.
Roy is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Carol Jean Zieschang; son Dan (Mary) Zieschang and daughter Vonda (Crews) Lott; four grandchildren Danny (Haley) Zieschang, Preston (Lindsey) Lott, Kailey (Adam) Majdi, Connor (Sarah) Lott; great-granddaughters Austin and Macey Zieschang; along with nieces, nephews, countless friends, church family members, and those whose lives were forever changed through Roy’s encouragement, friendship, and faith.
