Obituary

Robert Cotner, 86, of Georgetown, died on August 10, 2018.  He was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 29, 1931 to Franklin and Margaret Cotner. Robert worked his way through Ohio Wesleyan University and after graduating in May 1954, he joined the Air Force in August 1954 and began Pilot Training School, graduating from Multi- Engine training at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas in November of 1955. He was assigned to Harlingen, Texas Air Force Base to fly Navigator training missions and completed his AFROTC tour of duty in August of 1957.

Robert married his college sweetheart, Alsa "Sally" King, June 6, 1955 in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania and they moved to San Angelo, Texas during the 1950's drought, but found Harlingen green and sub-tropical.

Robert joined Armco Steel Corporation (now AK Steel) in September, 1957, working in sales and management for twenty-seven years.  While he was District manager for the Houston Sales office in the early Eighties, Chinese began dumping steel in Texas forcing the closing of the Armco Mill and sales district as well 2 other companies' mills. Taking early retirement, he set up a manufacturing representative company to help Texas businesses find steel products.  It succeeded, allowing Robert to stay in Texas for the rest of his life! Upon retiring he and Sally moved to Rockport, Texas for 8 years where he enjoyed hunting and fishing and joined the Rockport –Fulton Good Samaritans, becoming President and raising funds for a new building.  In 2006 Robert and Sally moved to Sun City and he joined the Hunting and Fishing Club serving on the Board and directing the 2008 Fish Fry team. He joined the Aviation and Nature Clubs and loved using the Fitness Center.

Multiple health problems caused Robert to become an invalid in 2017.  With the support of his wife and son, George, he stayed at home, watching sports, movies, and news on TV and listening to Classical music until his health failed and he passed away after one week at the Buckner Villa Siesta Home while receiving palliative care.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers John Cotner and William Cotner. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Alsa "Sally" Cotner; his sons: Shane Cotner (Patricia) of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and George Cotner of Georgetown; four granddaughters: Elizabeth Cotner of Chicago, Illinois, Mary Claire Cotner of Pikeville, Kentucky, Kathleen Miller (Matthew) of St. Louis, Missouri, and Rachel Sieferd (Bryan); and great grandson, Sebastian Seiferd of West Bloomfield, Michigan; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Family members will gather over Labor Day in the Michigan home of his son, Shane Cotner to honor his memory.  A graveside service will be held later at the George Washington Memorial Chapel in Valley Forge National Park in Pennsylvania.
