RICHARD LEE SMITH – LOVING HUSBAND, FATHER, GRANDFATHER, AND FRIEND
GEORGETOWN, TX – Richard Lee Smith, known primarily to his friends as Dick, 77, died on Friday, April 14, 2017 in residence at Georgetown Living Community in Georgetown, Texas.

He was born on April 23, 1939 in Rural Valley, Pennsylvania to Beryl and Olive (Patterson) Smith. He served as class president and graduated co-valedictorian from Shannock Valley High School in 1957. After high school, he attended Indiana State College where he earned degrees in Mathematics. Dick taught and coached basketball briefly at Ford City High School before beginning a career at IBM that would extend more than 30 years.

Dick valued knowledge, hard work, and the opportunity to teach and serve others. He was always quick to assist others in troubleshooting their computer problems or completing a work project. To many, his knowledge was encyclopedic. His love for computers and solving problems drove him. Even through his retirement, he continued working, volunteering at the Sun City Computer Club where he served as its President in 2006.

Dick was a consummate tinkerer and "tool man" who liked his things clean and in excellent working order. He was fiercely competitive and hardworking. Whether at the office, on the basketball court (in his younger years), playing Wii bowling (in recent years), or throwing bean bags, he hated to lose. He was at the same time kind and direct, quiet and outspoken, soft and hard. He will be missed by all.

Dick leaves behind his best friend and beloved wife of 28 years, Mary Q. (Brown) Smith; his sons, Gregory Smith and Michael Smith (Ashlie); his daughter, Lynne Copithorne (Bruce); his six grandchildren, Rachel Gladstone, Ryan Gladstone, Wyatt Smith, Cody Smith, Connor Smith and Riley Smith; his nephew, Jeffrey Smith (Manessa); his niece, Marcy (Bill) Murray; and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Beryl and Olive, his brother, Donald Smith, and late wife, Michele Smith.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 20 from 3:00pm to 4:00pm at The Worship Place, 811 Sun City Blvd, Georgetown, TX 78633, (512) 943-8430, with Sharing of Memories at 4:00pm.
