Richard Lynn Mangum was born in Goose Creek, Texas. He lived his childhood years in Cuero and San Antonio, Texas. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson H.S. in San Antonio where he served as the boy's basketball manager. He then attended Southwest Texas State University from 1965-69 where he completed his Bachelor of Education Degree. During that time he was very active in the Baptist Student Union ministries. He married Patricia Ruth Hinze on July 19, 1969. He was ordained to the Gospel Ministry at First Baptist Church San Marcos under the pastorate of Paul Powell. In 1972, he received his Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and went on to earn his Doctorate of Ministry from Luther Rice Seminary. He served in countless pastoral roles ministering to hundreds of pastors and churches all over Texas. Since 2008 he has served as an Area Representative for the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
Richard was an avid reader and student of US History, particularly Texas History. He has traveled the state of Texas, driving back roads and discovering the interrelated human stories from the era of Spanish Texas to the late 1800's. He was also a passionate sports spectator and a Baylor bear fan.
Richard is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Patricia Ruth Mangum; sons: Scott (wife Laura) and Jeff (wife Christy; and the beloved grandfather to: Macy, Haylee, Paige, Zac, Tyler and Claire. Richard was a man of great achievements, but his greatest legacy is the Christ-likeness he showed to everyone whose path he crossed.
