Obituary

Ray S. Ainsworth, of Georgetown, Texas, formerly of Levelland, Texas, passed away on Saturday, August 27, 2016 with his family by his side. He was 85 years old.

Ray was born in Fort Worth, Texas on February 19, 1931 to parents, Earl Ainsworth and Vera (Oakes) Ainsworth Benson. Following graduation from Fort Worth's Polytechnic High School, Ray attended Texas Wesleyan where he played basketball and married his first wife, Marelin Elizabeth Gunn. He was an all-around sports enthusiast, yet basketball was his number one passion. In Ray's professional life, he was the Business Division Manager for Southwestern Bell in Lubbock and the Texas Panhandle for over 32 years and retired in 1982. Ray held officer positions in The Optimist Club and was active in The Telephone Pioneers of America, the largest industry-related volunteer organization in the world. Ray married Brenda Jones on November 9, 1979.

Ray loved meeting new people while traveling the world with Brenda while they owned International Tours of Levelland.   He enjoyed spending time with friends and family while fishing, golfing, and playing gin. With all of his experiences and acquaintances, Ray was known to everyone as a very accomplished storyteller and kept everyone on the edge of their seats with great tales and jokes. He loved God, he cherished his family, and he enjoyed life. Ray will be greatly missed.

Ray's memory is revered by his loving family: wife, Brenda Ainsworth of Georgetown, Texas; daughters: Lea Gunn, Mechele Ainsworth and Mike Patty, Melanie Nelson and husband Rick, Melinda Ainsworth, and Jennifer Moore and husband Wayne; son, Jeff Jones and wife Becky; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Ray was preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Roy and Vera Benson; father, Earl Ainsworth; his first wife, Marelin Ainsworth; and sister, Frances Louise Ainsworth.

Memorial donations may be made in Ray's honor to the Georgetown Animal Shelter at www.pets.georgetown.org , or to the charity of your choice.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, August 31 at Grace Episcopal Church in Georgetown, TX with a Reception to follow.
