Obituary

Philip "Phil" Loren Powell, 81, loving husband, father and grandfather, graduated to glory on Wednesday, June 25, 2025 at his home in Round Rock, TX.

Phil was born on June 5, 1944 in Findlay, Ohio to Willis Powell and Katheryn "Pat" Powell. He attended Findlay public schools, and graduated from Findlay High School in June of 1962. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from Indiana Institute of Technology, graduating in May of 1966, and attended Grace Theological Seminary from the Spring of 1974 to the Fall of 1977.

Phil was older than most of the students at Grace Seminary. His professors saw the difference made by his life experiences. At their recommendation he had the privilege of pastoring small congregations, bringing the Lord's healing through his teaching, preaching and leadership.

Phil worked various jobs while living in Indiana and Ohio. His orthopedics career began as a part time employee while attending seminary, later becoming Vice President of Product Development with DePuy. His son Todd was born in Akron, Ohio in 1967, and his daughter, Heather, in 1970 in Columbus, Ohio. Phil found his way to Texas after being hired by Intermedics Orthopedics as a VP, eventually building a successful sales agency for Intermedics Orthopedics with a territory including Austin, San Antonio, and Corpus Christi. He loved The Great State of Texas, and became an honorary citizen in 1989.

Phil was never happier than when he was flying single engine planes. He earned his pilot license in 1967 at the age of 23. Years later, when his health would not allow him to fly, he would fondly tell stories of his various experiences while 4500 feet above ground. He kept his AOPA membership, and would read and reread every single AOPA monthly magazine before passing them onto fellow pilots.

The only subject Phil talked about more than planes was Jesus. He put his years at Grace Seminary to good use teaching Sunday School and preaching the Gospel. One glimpse of his leather Bible cover will inform you of how much he loved the Word. Above all, Phil strived to be a Godly man: demonstrating God's love, leading with integrity, and prayerfully seeking God's will in all matters.

Charming and handsome, he met his wife, Susan, while seated behind her at a Riverbend Choir rehearsal. In typical Phil fashion, he embarrassed her by making a flirty comment as he adjusted her boat neck tee. He apologized, and asked her out to a Sting concert. That date was on March 9, 1988 and they married on July 30th of that same year.

Phil's greatest accomplishment was blending two separate families into one. He and Susan went naively into marriage never imagining the complex dynamics and issues of uniting families. Though there were many challenges God faithfully answered prayers, providing His wisdom, mercy and grace abundantly.

Phil is survived by his wife of nearly 37 years, Susan, as well as his daughter Heather Stackhouse, son Sean Callahan and his wife Sukja, son Brandon Powell, four beautiful grandchildren Summer Carroll and Micah Stackhouse, Liam and Eli Callahan, brother, John Powell and his wife Lilly, sister Priscilla Zeller and her husband Bob, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Willis and Pat Powell, as well as his son, Todd.

A memorial celebration of Phil's life will be held on Tuesday, July 29 at 1:00 pm in The Loft at Cityview Bible Church, 2441 CR 112, Round Rock, TX. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Cityview Bible Church.
