Patricia Jean
Messer
July 28, 1934 – November 5, 2024
Patricia Jean Kretzmeier Messer, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2024, at the age of 90. Born on July 28, 1934, in Seguin, Texas, and raised in New Braunfels, Patricia, affectionately known as "Patsy", touched the lives of many with her warmth, generosity, and dedication to family and community.
Patricia graduated from New Braunfels High School in 1953 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology from North Texas State College in 1956, completing part of her studies at the UT Medical Branch in Galveston. It was during this time in Galveston that she met the love of her life, Dr. Robert Dale Messer. They married on June 8, 1957, in Dallas, Texas, embarking on a lifelong partnership that spanned 67 years until Robert's passing.
Patricia and Robert cherished their early years together, living abroad in Orléans, France, from 1957 to 1959, before settling in Mineral Wells, Texas, in 1960, where they raised their family. In 1997, they retired to Eureka Springs, Arkansas, a favorite location tied to their honeymoon, before later moving to Georgetown, Texas, in 2018 to be closer to loved ones.
Patricia was a woman of many talents and interests. She played violin with the San Antonio Orchestra and was a dedicated swimmer, participating in synchronized swimming in her youth. Gardening was her lifelong passion, and she achieved the distinction of Master Gardener. Patricia and Robert traveled extensively across the United States, Mexico, and Europe, exploring beautiful gardens and attending cattle events as part of Robert's cattle business.
Throughout her life, Patricia gave back to her community in numerous ways. In Mineral Wells, she was an active member of the Study Club, Women's Club, and First United Methodist Church Women's Circle. In Eureka Springs, she served as President of both the Garden Club and the Preservation Society and was a member of Toastmasters. Patricia's faith was central to her life, and she was a devoted member of the Methodist churches in Mineral Wells, Eureka
Springs, and Georgetown. In recent years, she attended services at the Worship Center Church in Sun City.
Patricia is survived by her son, Robert Jeffrey Messer, and his wife Carlynn of Weatherford; her daughter, Carrie Melissa Gutekunst, and her husband Bob of Austin; her three grandchildren, Allison Joy Vickers (and husband Tanner) of Waco, Robert Jacob Gutekunst (and wife Maija) of Round Rock, and Catherine Lee Messer of Weatherford; six great-grandchildren, Maxwell Henry Gutekunst, River Hill Vickers, Isabella Jo Gutekunst, Samuel Stephen Gutekunst, Nash Elijah Vickers, and John William Gutekunst. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Pontie Joe Pantermuehl, her nieces, Betty Pantermuehl Taylor and Brenda Pantermuehl Wiggs, and her brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Judy Messer of Temple.
Patricia made cherished friendships among the residents at her home since August 2023, The Hacienda of Georgetown, where she attended Sunday services and enjoyed community activities.
A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held on November 16, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. in the Tiffany Room at The Hacienda of Georgetown (60 Del Webb Blvd., Georgetown, TX 78633). In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to Samaritan's Purse.
Patricia will be remembered for her grace, kindness, and the love she shared with all who knew her. Her legacy of warmth, compassion, and community service will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.
