Nancy Lee
Travis
February 29, 1936 – October 27, 2023
In loving memory of Nance Travis-Tetzlaff, we are saddened to announce the passing of our wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, friend and mentor. After a long illness, she peacefully departed this world on October 27, 2023 while in hospice care.
With a constant pursuit of knowledge and the next experience, Nance never hesitated to use the sheer force of her personality and erudite gifts to provide stunning insight and assistance to those in need. Born in Brownwood, Texas on February 29, 1936 to John Clyde and Annie (Bynum) Goosby and was the last of five girls in the family. After moving to Houston in 1946 with the family, Nance graduated from Milby High School and earned a full scholarship at the University of Texas earning a degree in Speech and Debate. She earned her Masters in Education many years later from the University of Southern California.
Nance's career was wide and varied based on rearing her sons in Egypt (twice), Greece, Houston, Ethiopia, Germany and Colorado. She managed to calmly navigate living in countries during wars, revolutions, evacuations and terrorism. It provided a live laboratory to develop and adapt with resilience and handle stress. She was a teacher to elementary, high school and college age students (and even a few U.S. Army Green Berets) in private and public schools as well as University of Mary Hardin Baylor and Central Texas College. Nance held education positions in Egypt, Germany, Texas, Japan, Korea and the Philippines.
Never one to rest on an established path, Nance was also Director of a County Social Services in Colorado, ran a liquor store in Ethiopia, was the Marketing Director at Killeen Mall, and the regional director for the American Heart Association and went on to head up Volunteer Services for Metroplex Hospitals in Killeen and Lampasas. Her work was recognized with more than one United States Army Commander's Award for her work in the military community at Fort Hood.
The celebration of life and her amazing journey will be held at the Grace Episcopal Church, 1314 University Avenue, Georgetown, Texas on November 4, 2023 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Grace Episcopal Building Fund. She is survived by her husband, John Tetzlaff and his children as well as Nance's children Tim and Barrett, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, sister Jo Liston, and many nieces and nephews
