Nancy Louise
Ellis
July 9, 1938 – February 1, 2017
Nancy Ellis of Georgetown, TX passed away February 1, 2017 at the local St. David's Hospital. She was born in Bloomington, IN to Edwin and Gladys (Malicoat) Cunningham. She is the mother of two daughters, Cindy Ellis of Frisco, TX and Karen Chong of New York, NY. She is survived by her daughters, son-in-law FT Chong and four grandchildren - Jeremy and Pippa Chong and Eliza and Lucille Ellis. She is also survived by her siblings, Joe Cunningham of Columbus, IN, Carrie Elleman of Kokomo, IN and Margaret Peterson of Lexington, KY. She was preceded in death by her sister Mary Dollens, of Scottsburg, IN and her parents.
Nancy excelled in a career in education which spanned a period of 39 years and four school districts in Indianapolis, IN, Holt (Lansing), MI, Arlington, TX and Austin, TX. She earned a BS degree in education at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN and later earned her master's degree at Texas Wesleyan University.
She met her husband of 55 years at Indiana University where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. After graduation and Steve's active duty time in the USAF they married and began careers in Indianapolis. The family moved to Lansing, MI, then to Arlington in 1978 and finally to Austin. In 2000 Nancy and Steve retired to Sun City Georgetown, TX.
Nancy was a member of The Worship Place in Sun City and participated in many clubs, charitable groups and church activities prior to her illness. She and Steve had opportunities to enjoy extensive world travel together.
Nancy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000, underwent a mastectomy and was pronounced cancer-free. However, in 2006 the cancer had metastasized to her lungs and later to her liver. Her cancer type was a rare one that does not respond to traditional chemotherapy or radiation and she was referred to a clinic in San Antonio that treated her with promising trial drugs of the world. She was lucky to be cared for the last few years by our loving caregiver, Trish Rodriguez.
By 2016 cancer had been detected in her colon and brain. She fought the disease for almost 17 years, bravely putting up with never-ending medical procedures until she finally lost the battle on February 1, 2017.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 13, 2017 at The Worship Place, Georgetown, Texas. Pastor Kelly Barnett will be officiating. Inurnment will follow the service at 2:00 p.m. at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas.
