Max
Schmid
December 3, 1930 – October 5, 2020
Max Schmid, 89, of Georgetown, Texas, passed away peacefully at his home on October 5, 2020.
Maximillian Joseph Schmid was born December 3, 1930 in Munich, Germany to Joseph and Martha (Diron) Schmid. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Freising. Psalm 23, his confirmation verse, remained precious to him throughout his life.
Max was born to make music. In his youth, he studied at music schools in Eichstadt and Munich and as an adult, resumed his studies at the University of Minnesota. During his youth, Max participated in community and church orchestras and choirs in Germany. As an adult, he joined the 3M Orchestra, serving as its president for 2 years. He led many church-based brass and woodwind ensembles, directed children's choirs, played trombone with Southwestern University's Orchestra, sang in community and church choirs and gave private piano and trombone lessons. His love of music inspired many young and not-so-young musicians.
After emigrating from Germany in 1957, Max was employed by 3M Company in Hutchinson, Minnesota for 32 years. He retired in 1989 as a safety engineer and he and his family relocated to Georgetown, Texas. Besides music, Max enjoyed carpentry and wood-working and built everything from doll houses to wall-sized bookshelves and cabinetry. He was also a rock hound, traveling many regions of the mid and western U.S. collecting fossils and gemstones. A passion for which Max was widely admired was his Bavarian cooking and Christmas baking. From his tutelage, many family and friends learned how to make Rouladen, Spaetzle, Gravies, Bread Dumplings, Bavarian Pancakes, Bavarian Potato Salad, Red Cabbage, Kaiserschmarren, Reisauflauf, Zwetschgendatschi, Apple Strudel, Oster Brot, Dresdener Stollen and more. His Christmas baking season began in mid November with quadruple batches of Lebkuchen, followed by a dozen varieties of European cookies, all made in mass quantities to share with loved ones.
Max is survived by his wife, Susan; 3 sons, Klaus (Sue) Schmid, Brian (Paula) Schmid, Gabe (Emilie) Schmid; 2 stepsons, Heath Pochucha and Nathaniel Pochucha; 3 daughters, Helene (John) Doring, Heidi (Ralph) Tucker, and Rachel (Jimmy) Barkley; 21 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, nine siblings; two children, Elizabeth and Bruce; and one grandson, Adrian Schmid. Max deeply loved his family, his church families and his many friends and neighbors and their love sustained him.
Funeral Service will be at 2PM on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at Faith Lutheran Church in Georgetown. A private graveside service will follow at the IOOF Cemetery, Georgetown.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the music or building programs at Faith Lutheran Church, 4010 Williams Drive, Georgetown TX 78628.
