Obituary

Mary Lynn Buchanan Treuter w as born to Robert McGwen and Helen Eleanor (Antkowiak) Buchanan in Swedish Covenant Hospital, Chicago, Illinois on June 2, 1940. She passed away peacefully in her residence at The Legacy at Oak Hill, Austin, Texas on August 31, 2025 with family by her side.

Mary was a proud mid-westerner and Chicagoan and shared many stories of walking on Michigan Ave in summer (and winter) in her beloved hometown. She also resided in: Wilmette, Douglas, and Glenn, Illinois; Saugatuck, Michigan; Kansas City, Missouri; Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico; as well as Austin and Georgetown, Texas.

Growing up Mary loved going fishing, riding horses, "Tifarro" was her favorite, and spending time on the Great Lakes. Over the summer months, she frequently stayed with her father and her step-mother at their home in Ontario. Mary also enjoyed toe tap ballet.

She attended New Trier High School, just north of Chicago, and also attended the University of Buffalo, in New York.

Mary began working at age 15. Her first "professional" job was with Charles A. Stevens Department Stores for over 18 years. She deeply loved the retail business and took specific pride that, despite resistance/rebuffs from her supervisor, manager and regional director, successfully convinced the department store's board that women's pants suits should be offered. She loved to travel the United States and the world as a retail buyer for over 40 years and was a Weight Watchers Leader in Austin before retiring.

On one trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico she met Bill Treuter who she was united in marriage to on July 27, 1996 in Chicago, Illinois. The loving couple built a house in Sun City, Georgetown in July of that same year. They enjoyed traveling from their new home to many central Texas and Hill Country destinations. They enjoyed a wonderful life together until Bill's passing in May 2008.

Mary had a great many friends in Sun City and Georgetown and eagerly anticipated Senior University each new semester at Southwestern. She volunteered at the Georgetown Animal Shelter for a long time and was a member of The Worship Place, numerous book clubs and many women's groups. She enjoyed working in her yard and it was always beautiful. Mary was a valued neighbor keeping guard of friends' homes, plants, pets, you name it, while they were away. She loved when she was able to get together with family over Holidays and special occasions as she got to see her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She leaves behind loving family members: stepsons, Lawrence David Treuter and wife, Rudy, and Douglas Alan Treuter; numerous grandchildren: Ryan William Treuter and wife, Timberly, Jordan Lee Treuter and wife, Beka, Kimberly Ann Treuter, and Ana Renee Treuter; her cherished great-grandchildren: Tatum Nicole, Taylor Reece, Tucker William, Bennett MacDowell, Jovie June and Andre Lynne.

A memorial service is scheduled at The Worship Place in Georgetown, Texas September 26, 2025 @ 1:00 p.m. If you're called to make a donation in Mary's honor, the Georgetown Animal Shelter would be most appreciative, or a charity of your choosing.
