Mary Jean Osborn
Holden
November 29, 1939 – June 10, 2026
Mary Jean Osborn Holden, lovingly known as "Mimi,"passed away peacefully on June 10, 2026, at the age of 86. She leaves behind a legacy of love, education, laughter, and unwavering devotion to her family.
Mary Jean was born on November 29, 1939. On February 21, 1959, she married the love of her life, Dr. Orbry Dean Holden, beginning a remarkable partnership that spanned 67 years. Together, they built a life centered on family, learning, and service to others.
Jean and Orbry shared a love of golf, travel, and spending time with family and friends. Golf was more than a hobby—it was a cherished family tradition. Family golf scrambles became a staple of holidays and celebrations, creating countless memories filled with laughter, friendly competition, and togetherness. The Holdens also enjoyed traveling the world with their children and grandchildren, with favorite family adventures including skiing trips to Crested Butte and Snowmass.
A lifelong educator, Mary Jean dedicated her career to shaping the lives of students and future teachers across Texas. She earned her Bachelor's Degree in Education from The University of Texas at Austin, a Master's Degree in Education from Southwest Texas State University, and a Ph.D. in Education from The University of Texas at Austin. Her professional journey included serving as an educator in Alvin ISD and Austin ISD, as Director of Teacher Certification for the Texas Education Agency, and later as a Professor of Educational Administration at The University of Texas at Austin, Texas State and Southwestern University. Throughout her career, she was a passionate advocate for excellence in education and the development of future generations of teachers and school leaders.
Outside of her professional accomplishments, Mary Jean embraced life with enthusiasm and joy. She was an avid golfer whose skill on the course earned the admiration of friends and competitors alike. She also served as President for the San Gabriel Women’s Club in Georgetown, and the President of the Ladies Golf Association at Berry Creek Country Club. She had a keen eye for photography, capturing treasured memories through her lens, and she was a gifted cook who delighted family and friends with meals made from the heart.
While her academic and professional achievements were significant, Mary Jean's greatest pride and joy was her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was immensely proud of her children, Bill Holden and Robin Wolf, and cherished watching them build successful lives and families of their own.
Nothing brought her greater happiness than her grandchildren, Holly Huddleston, Ashley Huddleston, and Bodie Holden. They were the light of her life, and she loved them beyond measure. Whether cheering on their accomplishments, sharing stories, offering guidance, or simply spending time together, Mimi treasured every moment with them.
Mary Jean will be remembered for her sharp wit, infectious sense of humor, competitive golf game, remarkable intelligence, and steadfast commitment to the people she loved. Her warmth, wisdom, and strength touched countless lives, and her influence will continue to be felt through the many students, educators, friends, and family members she inspired.
She leaves behind her beloved husband, Dr. Orbry Dean Holden; her children, Bill Holden and Robin Wolf; her grandchildren, Holly Huddleston, Ashley Huddleston, and Bodie Holden; and many extended family members, friends, colleagues, and former students who were blessed to know her.
Though she will be deeply missed, her family finds comfort in the countless memories she created and the extraordinary legacy she leaves behind.
A life well lived, a family well loved, and a legacy that will endure for generations.
Our family will hold a private service to celebrate her life next month.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Jean Holden’s name to the American Stroke Association.
