Mary Elizabeth
Draughon
October 6, 1932 – June 15, 2024
On June 15, 2024, Mary Elizabeth Draughon, of Georgetown, TX, died at the age of 91.
Mary was born on October 6, 1932, in Atlanta, GA, the youngest member of a very loving family that included her parents, Libby and Henry Frey Draughon, maternal grandmother, Ella Napier, brother, Bob, and sister, Laniece. Mary grew up in Florida and graduated from Orlando High School. She attended Rollins College.
At a height of 4'9", Shakespeare's quote: "Though she be but little, she is fierce" exemplifies Mary. She was passionately independent and did not marry or have children. She deeply loved and valued three generations of nieces and nephews. Mary also enjoyed the company of dogs, Butch, Valentine and Sundance, throughout her life.
Aunt Mary maintained her quick-witted humor until the end and was the self-described nut on the family tree. Mary was always game for an adventure. In the mid 1960's, she answered an advertisement in the paper placed by the U.S. State Department for a secretary overseas. After two years in Thailand, she was allowed to return to the U.S. via any route she chose. She planned and executed a trip around the world. The government shipped home all her possessions, including a chair made to ride atop an elephant. She continued traveling with friends and family and shared tales from places as varied as Scotland, New Zealand, Africa, Canada and Hawaii.
After Thailand, Mary spent her adult life in Dallas, TX. The women in her family reunited there in the 1980's. Mary's recently widowed mother moved from Orlando, and her sister moved from Houston, TX. The three maintained separate residences within close proximity. While they pursued their own interests, they were nicknamed The Three Musketeers because they were together so often. They were all active members at St. Barnabas Presbyterian Church in Richardson, TX.
Mary retired from Bank of America as an administrative assistant. She was a fast typist, a good writer, and a fan of the movies. In her 70's, she was paid by a locally published newsletter to watch and review movies, complete with a press pass. Mary and her sister relocated to Georgetown, TX in 2017, enjoying their new friends within the Wesleyan community.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, a niece and two great-grand nephews. Her sister died six days after Mary. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
A joint memorial service will be held for the sisters on July 20 at the Wesleyan Independent Living Hewlitt Room in Georgetown, TX. In memory of Mary, hug a family member, share a laugh with a friend and don't be afraid to be silly.
