Mary K.
Cutright
March 25, 1933 – January 30, 2025
Mary Kathryn Haycox Cutright, born 3/25/1933 to parents Archie and Anna Haycox, passed away 1/30/2025 at St. David's Hospital, Round Rock, TX.
Mary was the beloved wife of Marvin (late 1/18/2023) and mother to daughters Mary and Susan. In their final years, Mary and Marvin resided in a Memory Care Community in Round Rock, TX near daughter Mary and son-in-law Allen. Mary faced challenges of aging with all the love, humor, courage and determination she could muster. We mourn her passing, celebrate her full life, and cherish the memories.
Mary grew up in southwestern Pennsylvania. She graduated from Mapletown High School, and was a member of the Debate Team, National Honor Society, Masque and Gavel, Student Council, Tri-Hi-Y, and Teenage Book Club. She went on to graduate from Penn Commercial College and married Marvin Cutright 10/31/1952. Mary and Marvin met as high school classmates, and were together for over 70 years.
After their wedding, Marvin was drafted into the Army on their honeymoon. He was stationed in Philadelphia and Mary relocated to the Washington, D.C. area. There, Mary was employed with the Federal Civil Service Corps, assigned to the Air Force. She worked in an administrative role where she took on increasing responsibilities and received awards for service excellence.
Marvin completed his Army service with honor, and was trained as a stenographer and court reporter. They moved to Abingdon, Virginia for the next leg of their journey, starting their family and progressing their careers. On that same path, they relocated back to southwestern Pennsylvania when Marvin was selected as a senior reporter for the Federal Courts in the Western District based in Pittsburgh.
Mary and Marvin built a good life in Pennsylvania, where they raised their children, formed lifetime friendships, grew in faith with North Buffalo Presbyterian Church, and reclaimed an old farm that produced a treasure trove of learning experiences and fun memories. In addition to being a wife, homemaker and mother, Mary worked tirelessly managing operations and compiling transcripts of the records Marvin created both for court proceedings and for depositions arranged by private lawyers in civil cases. She was also active in her community, serving as a PTA President, band booster, church Trustee, Sunday School teacher, and Adult Bible Study leader.
They retired to Berkeley Springs, West Virginia in 1994. Mary continued her community service. She served on the Board of Directors for the Humane Society of Morgan County, as Secretary and then as Vice President and head of the Internal Affairs Committee. She was named HSMC Volunteer of the Year. She was also a member of the Foxglove Garden Club and was honored by them as Community Volunteer for 2000.
In 2001 Mary and Marvin moved to the Austin, Texas area near daughter Mary, son-in-law Allen and his family. They lived independently until 2017, when more support and assistance was needed.
Over her lifetime Mary enjoyed many adventures, travel and gatherings with family and friends. Day-to-day, she was an avid reader, loved big hugs, gardening, cheering on the Pittsburgh Pirates and Pittsburgh Steelers, music, solving mysteries, cuddling fur babies, being included, and having a good laugh. She was responsible and loyal. She was firm in her beliefs but open to new insight.
Mary is survived by daughters Mary Cutright Brook (Allen) and Susan Cutright (John Bogdan). She is also survived by brother James Haycox, sister Carol Haycox Mullins, and sister-in-law Brigitte Cutright (late Hayden Cutright). Surviving nieces and nephews are: Elizabeth Reid Duley (Wayne and family), John Reid (Susan and family), Steven Haycox (Linda and family), Clare Bargerstock (Wendy and family), Sara Haycox (Robi and family), Denise Bargerstock Marker (Rich), Angela Cutright Abraham (Mark and family), Ronald Cutright (Stacey and family), Archie Mullins (and family), Debra Bargerstock Pompeii (late Mark), and Jackie Mullins (and family).
