Obituary

Martha Dobyns, 91, of Hutto, Texas, was called to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 19th, 2025. She was born on Thursday, October 26th, 1933, to John Wesley Hurt, Sr. and Madie Davis Hurt. Honoring her memory is her loving husband of almost 75 years, Rev. Don Dobyns whom she deeply loved. Together God blessed them with four beautiful daughters and in later years a special daughter by love.

As a young couple in their early twenties, Rev. Don and Martha Dobyns began their ministry, founding and pastoring churches across the United States. In 1971 they became missionaries to the South Pacific, sharing the gospel throughout Samoa, the Kingdom of Tonga and the Fiji Islands. Their work led to countless lives being touched and hundreds of churches being established. After returning from the mission field, they pastored in Comanche, Texas, their childhood hometown. It was a special time for Martha to be close to her aging parents. Upon their retirement they came back to Austin, Texas where their daughters lived close by. They were members of New Life Austin and were actively involved in the ministry for more than 2 decades.

Martha was affectionally known by many as Isa, Ma'ata, Grandmommy, Namaw, and other cherished titles. She was a wonderful lady of faith, dignity, strength and class. Martha Dobyns made an impact on thousands of people around the world. Whether having lunch with the Queen of Tonga or reaching out to a person in need, she was a blessing!  Her legacy and influence are widespread, and she leaves behind a great example for us all.

In the last 10 years Martha became known locally for "Grandmommy's Peanut Brittle!" It was a delight to eat and very addictive! She would receive calls requesting for orders many at a time. When they ran out at the local store, they would call her saying "People are crying for more! When will you deliver?" She was a very gifted lady!

Martha was preceded in death by her parents; John Wesley Hurt, Sr and Madie Davis Hurt. Her siblings: Dorothy Jean Walker, Nila Ann Wright, Wanda LaNell Burns, Billy Ray Byrum, J.W. "Dub" Hurt Jr, Linda Lee Shifflett, Velda Lynn Stapp, and Robert Harvey Hurt.

Martha is survived by her husband, Don; and children, Ladona (Greg) Claiborne, Deborah (Wilburn) Neyland, Phebe Joanna (Alfred) Whiteside, Marsha (Marty) Montey, Patricia Ruthstrom, 11 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.

A time of visitation will be held from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 24th, 2025  at New Life Austin. The preservice with viewing will be at 12:00 noon, with the main service at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 25, 2025, also at New Life Austin with Pastory Rodney Shaw officiating.

Mrs. Dobyns will be laid to rest following the service at Live Oak Cemetery, Manchaca, TX.
