Obituary

Marcos Gabriel Cortez, age 71, of Jarrell, Texas, entered the kingdom of heaven on November 1, 2024. Born on September 11, 1953, in Bakersfield, California, to Marcelino and Natividad Cortez, Marcos lived a life full of love, joy, and a deep commitment to his family, friends, and community.

Marcos is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Marie G. Cortez; his children, Marcos, Billie, and Ariana; his four grandsons: Austin, Nicolas, Tobias, and Liam; his siblings, Raynita, Rodney, Eric, and Edward; and numerous family members.

Growing up, Marcos served as an altar boy at St. Therese Catholic Church in Shafter, California, where he first learned the value of service, faith, and community. He later earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. Throughout his career, Marcos was known for his strong work ethic, leadership, and unwavering dedication to his profession. He was highly respected by his colleagues and took great pride in mentoring and uplifting those around him. Outside of work, Marcos was a dedicated volunteer at the Villa Montalvo Performing Arts Center, where he had the privilege of meeting many of his favorite jazz musicians and providing personalized care for the performers. His impeccable organizational skills, punctuality, and thoughtful attention to detail made him an invaluable member of the team, and his warm, welcoming nature earned him the admiration of both artists and colleagues alike. His warmth, care, and infectious smile made him not only a reliable and steady presence but someone whose kindness left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered. Marcos always maintained a strong faith and love of God, spending time every morning outdoors in prayer and reflecting on his many blessings. He also enjoyed traveling, especially learning about new cultures and trying different cuisines, always eager to expand his horizons and experience the world through new perspectives.

Marcos was a man of impeccable style, always dressed in button-down collared shirts, with his silver hair perfectly coiffed in his signature "DA" (Duck Tail). He was voted "Best Dressed" in high school, a recognition that reflected his lifelong attention to detail and polished appearance. With a great wit and charisma, Marcos could light up any room, always making those around him laugh and feel at ease. His quick sense of humor and signature quips made him unforgettable—at every destination arrival, his classic comment was always, "Smoke 'em if you got 'em." His warm smile, jovial personality, and encouraging nature made him a beloved figure to all who knew him. He was known for his meticulous organization, always on time, and keeping everything in its place—qualities that made him a reliable and steady presence in the lives of his loved ones.

Marcos also had a deep love for music, particularly smooth jazz, salsa, and Spanish love ballads. He was especially fond of the music of Luis Miguel, whose romantic ballads resonated with his own heart. One of his favorite signature songs was "You're Still a Young Man" by Tower of Power, a track that embodied his youthful spirit and zest for life.

Above all, Marcos was a devoted family man. He took immense pride in his four grandsons—Austin, Nicolas, Tobias, and Liam—and supported their individual accomplishments, growth, and development. He was always there to cheer them on and celebrate their successes, showing them how much they meant to him. His love and pride in their achievements were evident in every moment he spent with them, and his encouragement helped foster their confidence and sense of self. He loved unconditionally and without judgment, offering a heart full of acceptance and compassion to everyone he met.

Marcos was also deeply fond of his best friend, Marley, his Miniature Australian Shepherd, whose companionship brought him comfort and joy.

A celebration of Marcos' life is being planned for both his Texas and California friends and family. Details will follow, and we encourage everyone who knew Marcos to stop by, share their memories, and reflect on how he may have touched their lives.

Marcos will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, infectious smile, and unwavering support for his family. His legacy of love, encouragement, and loyalty will live on through his children, grandchildren, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed but forever cherished.

In closing, we share this prayer:

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

The courage to change the things I can,

And the wisdom to know the difference."
