Kenneth Anton
Gusnowski
October 16, 1942 – May 30, 2026
St. John's Methodist Church
Starts at 10:30 am (Central time)
Kenneth Anton “Gus” Gusnowski, teed off for his final round at 2:49pm on Saturday, May 30th. If there is a golf course in heaven, you can bet he made his tee time right on schedule - and what a beautiful day it was for golf.
Ken was born in Elk Point, Alberta, Canada, where his love of sports began early. At just six years old, he laced up his skates in the kitchen and trekked through the snow to a neighborhood ice rink a block away to play hockey. By the age of twelve, he often found himself competing alongside young men several years older. He favored the wingman position, but would fill in anywhere as long as he got to play.
In his mid-twenties, Ken headed north to work on oil derricks in Canada’s northwest territories. His talent and determination led him to specialized training in Houston in oilfield blowout control engineering and safety design. Over the years, he worked in challenging environments, helping cap wells and remove underwater blowout equipment. His career took him all over the world, from middle-of-the-ocean rigs to tropical Malaysia. It later brought him to SEDCO in Dallas and then Stewart & Stevenson in Houston, where he excelled as a sales representative in the oilfield equipment industry, and met his partner of 50 years, Linda.
When the oil industry downturn arrived in 1985, Ken moved his family to Georgetown and began a new career in a business that showcased his very natural ability to grow trees and plants. This man had two green thumbs. Ken bought Georgetown Nursery, which was located in San Gabriel Park. Shade is provided all around Georgetown thanks to many large trees that were planted by Ken and his crew 30 years ago. After retiring from the nursery business he spent his time working in his thriving, beautiful yard, enjoying a game of golf and attending as many Texas Stars Hockey games as he could.
Ken loved country music, and would often serenade his family and friends with his favorite songs. If Ken had a guitar in his hand and a microphone nearby you knew you were in for a treat, and that a great memory was about to be made. Ken also loved spending time with family. His favorite time of year was Thanksgiving when family gathered at his house for two to three days of food, games, music and lots of laughs. One year he tried smoking a duck, which quickly became a specialty of his and a fan favorite at the Big Meal. Afterwards he enjoyed sitting around the fire pit swapping stories of the past year’s accomplishments and funny mishaps. He especially liked to hear about the successes and adventures of his kids and grandkids.
Ken is lovingly remembered by his spouse and partner of almost 50 years, Linda; Three daughters - Sherry Smith (Geno), Shelly Jones (Kenneth) and Corey Herrell (Kenny), and a bonus son, Adam Callaway; Six grandchildren - Alexis, Gabby, Griffin, Baylor, Sabrina and Hudson; Two sisters - Paulette Tingley (Wayne) and Sandra Dee; and a widespread number of family and friends who will be keeping Ken’s memory alive by sharing “Ken” stories for years to come.
The family would like to thank Hospice Austin for the compassion that was shown to Ken during his last six weeks. The staff that included Devyn, Barbara and Dr. Wu had a demeanor that comforted us and made Ken feel that his concerns were heard and addressed in a caring and professional manner.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, June 15 2026 at 10:30am in St. John’s Methodist Church in Georgetown, Tx. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John’s Methodist Church Children’s Ministry (VBS).
