Karen Arlene Freeman, 89, passed on to glory on Tuesday, October 8, 2024. Karen was born in Appleton City, Missouri and was the daughter of Howard and Wilma Moss. She graduated from Carthage High School with honors, earned an associate degree from Cottey College, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Missouri at Kansas City. On Valentine's Day in 1958, Karen met Melvin Freeman. They married the following year, moved to Fort Worth, and had two daughters, Cindy "Nan" and Deb.
In 1969, Karen began her career with USPA-IRA, now known as First Command, in Fort Worth, becoming the company's first woman director and then director of meetings and events in 1983 until she retired in 1995. Karen and Mel cherished their 36 years together before Mel passed, which included building a home in Granbury in 1991. She made her final home in Georgetown, Texas.
A passionate traveler, Karen explored four continents, 17 countries, and 41 states, with her baptism being reaffirmed in the Jordan River. In late 2019, Karen pursued her long-held dream of writing fiction, producing thirteen unpublished novels.
Karen is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Howard (Bill); husband, Mel; and daughter, Cindy. Karen's love and grace will be forever cherished by her daughter, Deb, and her cat, Precious.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, at the Round Rock Presbyterian Church in Round Rock. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, at the Acton Cemetery in Granbury, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shadow Cats in Round Rock, Texas, or the Williamson County Animal Shelter in Georgetown, Texas.
