Obituary

Juanita McKay Johnson

Feb 14, 1944 - May 29, 2026

We are sad for our own loss to announce that Juanita McKay Johnson from Georgetown went to the Lord on May 29th. She spent her final days surrounded by her boys and grandchildren after a brave struggle with MDS. Juanita was an amazing wife, mother, MeMe and close friend to many. She fought her disease long enough to enjoy the pictures of the wedding of her grandson Walker and his bride Lea, who were married just a few days before her passing.

She was raised in Baton Rouge, LA and Baytown, TX, where she met Melvin Johnson on a blind date in 1962. Melvin recognized his great fortune in their meeting, and they married shortly after Melvin’s graduation from Texas A&M in 1964. Together they had three sons and built a life surrounded by family and a group of deep friendships.

While chasing her three boys, she managed to serve as a second-grade teacher and then middle school guidance counselor. She served children for more than 35 years in New Braunfels, San Antonio, Kerrville, Ganado and Lockhart public schools. To become a licensed counselor, she attended night school at Our Lady of the Lake University, where she earned her master’s degree while working full time and raising kids. She loved helping children, including friends of her boys who turned each of her houses into gathering places. She often practiced her counseling skills on her boys and as many friends as needed an ear. We will dearly miss her earned wisdom and willingness to share it.

Juanita relished her relationships with the Lord and with her many friends. She made a point to build new and lasting friendships in each of the six communities she joined over the past 62 years, including here in Georgetown. Her favorite activity was sitting in a living room with a friend talking about the Lord, husbands, kids and friends. She did that as often as she could, leaving a long list of deep personal friendships over many years.

She was preceded in death by her sweet husband Melvin, parents, in-laws, sister Cathy and her precious grandson Mackay. She is survived by her sister Martha, sons Hayden(Tracey), Heath (Julie) and Marc (Jamie-Jo) and her grandchildren Walker, Jake, Reagan, Hayden and Allie.

She will be honored at First Baptist Church of Georgetown on Saturday, June 13 at 10:30am. All are welcome. The family requests that we model her by wearing bright colors in her honor.
