Joseph (Jack) Stevenson Starkey Jr., 92, passed away peacefully in Round Rock on August 8, 2025. Born June 2, 1933, in Amarillo, Texas to Joseph (Joe) Stevenson Starkey and Mary Theola Strong, Jack was raised in Pearsall, Texas before his family moved to Monahans, Texas.
Jack graduated from Monahans High School in 1951, continuing his studies at the University of Texas in Austin with a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry in 1956 and a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1958. At UT he was a member of Acacia fraternity.
After graduating from UT Jack moved to Houston where he met Sue Starkey (née Stewart) while she was attending Lillie Jolly School of Nursing. The couple married in Houston during Hurricane Debra on July 25,1959 and remained married until Sue's untimely death from cancer in 2002.
Jack and Sue lived in Austin and then Georgetown. Jack remained in Georgetown a few years after Sue's passing, then moved to Sun City in 2007.
Jack pursued a career not only in pharmacy, but also for the State of Texas. He worked at the historic Grove Drug Store on 6th Street in Austin, then was employed by the state, retiring from the Texas Rehabilitation Commission in 1995. However, he enjoyed the interaction with customers as a working pharmacist and continued to enjoy part-time work at Gus's Drug Store in Georgetown, Leander, and Temple. Jack was also a lifelong UT Longhorns football fan and enjoyed swimming, handball and other fitness sports.
While living in Sun City Jack met the woman who would be his companion for the remainder of his life, Celia Plante. The duo enjoyed walks, theatre, dining and sharing conversation.
Jack was very proud of and is survived by son Joe Starkey (Shanna) of Austin, daughter Shannon Starkey of Austin, nephew Scott Finley (Gabrielle) of Dallas and preceded by Sue Starkey and Brett Finley, nephew.
A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, August 13, 2025 at 11am at Ramsey Funeral Home, 5600 Williams Dr., Georgetown, Texas 78633. A reception will follow at Ramsey.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society and American Heart Association.
