John Robert Thomas, Sr. went to be with his Lord surrounded by his family on October 1, 2016. He leaves behind a loving family and many friends who will miss him.
The Thomas Family will receive visitors on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Ramsey Funeral Home. Funeral Services are scheduled for Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Ramsey Funeral Home, 5600 Williams Drive, Georgetown, Texas 78633.
John was the eighth of nine children born to J.D. and Laura Belle (Harrell) Thomas on October 7, 1932 and passed away just one week before his 84th birthday.
In addition to being a proud native of Georgetown, John served his community on the Georgetown Independent School District School Board for 12 years including several years as President. He was a member of the Gabriel Oaks Church of Christ. He served as Deacon and Elder for 20 years in the Georgetown Church of Christ. He had also been active in the Cattlemen's Association and the Texas Pork Producers Association.
John graduated with a B.S. in Vocational Agriculture from Texas State University. He was employed by Dow Chemical in Midland, Texas and Georgetown, Texas for 35 years. John retired as a Senior Representative in Pharmaceutical Sales in 1994.
John was a veteran of the Korean War, proudly serving in the United States Navy from 1951-1954.
Marjorie Frances Poole came into John's life and they were married on August 17, 1957 in Georgetown. They lovingly welcomed two children to their family, Laura and John.
John was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: J.D. Thomas Jr., Ray Thomas, Sr.; sisters: Addie Mae Brooks, Grace Short, Mary Dibrell; brothers-in-law: Harry Brooks, H.C. Short, Lee Turner, James Stone, John Dibrell, Ralph Poteet and Dudley Poole; sisters-in-law: Ruth Thomas and Dorthy Thomas.
Survivors include the following: John's loving wife of 59 years, Marjorie; daughter, Laura and her husband Andrew Milne of Rowlett, Texas; son, John and his wife, Kim, of Weatherford, Texas; granddaughters: Peyton Thomas of Stephenville, Texas and Hallie Thomas of Weatherford, Texas; sisters: Alice Turner of Ft. Worth, Texas, Anne Poteet of Mesquite, Texas and Martha Stone of Fredericksburg, Texas; sister-in-law, Ruth Poole of Georgetown, Texas.
Gentlemen honored to serve as Pallbearers for John will be: Ray Thomas, Jr., Clay Short, Thomas Stone, Chip Edmiston, Jeff Clifford and Ricky Horne. Honorary Pallbearers are: G.W. Walker, Bill Edmiston, Fred Kaufman, Tommy Knudsen and Wayne Truxal.
Memorials may be made in John's honor to the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Gabriel Oaks Church of Christ or a charity of your choice.
