Obituary

John Wendell Swardstrom

Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Teacher, and Scholar

John W. Swardstrom passed away peacefully on May 6, 2025, at his home in Georgetown, Texas. He was a man of quiet strength, sharp intellect, and a dry sense of humor that made him both a thoughtful companion and a welcome presence in any room.

John was born on December 29, 1932, on a farm in Hurdsfield, North Dakota. That early life instilled in him the values of hard work, humility, and resilience—qualities that defined him throughout his life.

He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Physics from Clemson University and went on to teach at Massachusetts Maritime Academy, where he shared his love of science with clarity, patience, and the occasional well-placed joke. He was a gifted educator who left a lasting impression on generations of students.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Barbara (Hulick) Swardstrom—the love of his life and his best friend. He is also survived by his three sons—Eric (Lyn), Brian (Peter), and Mark (Meghan); and his seven grandchildren, in whom he took great pride as he watched them grow into thoughtful young adults. He leaves behind his brother, Paul David Swardstrom; his sisters—Arlene Hansen, Sandra Heinle, and Merrilee Foote; and Elizabeth Bass Sullivan the mother of his sons.

John lived a quiet, content life, filled with simple joys: a good book, a competitive card game, and spirited conversation. He was drawn to wide-open spaces—the prairie farm of his youth, the vastness of the sea, and the rolling hills of Texas—places that mirrored his thoughtful nature and love for quiet reflection. Whether surrounded by his poker buddies or deep in discussion with his reading group, he thrived on wit, camaraderie, and lifelong learning.

He will be remembered for his sharp mind, steady character, dry wit, and strong sense of responsibility. John led a thoughtful and consistent life, and the example he set continues to influence those who knew him.

A private family memorial will be held later.
