John
Snowden
June 25, 1935 – April 4, 2025
John George Snowden passed away on April 4th, 2025 in Georgetown Texas, lovingly surrounded by his family.
John lived a life worth living. He was born in Georgetown on June 25, 1935 to Ruby and John Snowden. He grew up on a family farm with his siblings Norma, Ben, Bill, and little sister Carra. He was the first of the boys to play sports, joining the football, basketball, and baseball teams. His love for sports was evident as his dad made him walk the 6 miles to get home from school and keep up with his chores after practice. He graduated Georgetown High School in 1952, where he was crowned Mr. GHS.
John joined the Marines after high school. He served in the Korean War and was a member of the honor guard and silent drill team for the 1st Marine Division between 1953-1956.
After his completion in service, he returned to Texas. He worked for his older brother Dez while attending Arlington College (now UT Arlington). He transferred to University of North Texas to complete his degree in physical education health and recreation as he wanted to be a teacher and coach in 1960.
John became a PE teacher for Dallas ISD and was responsible for all the after-school programs. He took a group of boys to YMCA Camp Grady Spruce for a field trip and found his calling. He fell in love with the camp and after asking how one gets a job there, he somehow became their waterfront director. He continued working at the school and weekends at Grady Spruce until he earned a full-time position in 1963 as a camp director under his mentor, Ray Bean.
Ray encouraged John to expand his horizons and he went on to accept offers for YMCA in Michigan at Camp Martin Johnson and the YMCA in the San Berardino Mountains in California. He thrived in the world of camping, it combined his love for sports, nurturing children's growth, and his leadership skills.
In 1972, he accepted a job at the New York YMCA Camp in Huguenot, NY, where he stayed for the next 25 years. The camp was initially only running in the summer, but John set (and achieved) his goals to make it a year-round facility that taught outdoor education, hosted conferences and events, and was the home of a world-class sports camp program. It wasn't all work though, in 1975, he married the love of his life, Pamela.
His career flourished over the years; he became the Executive Director for Camping Services, Vice President for Camping and Conference Services and District Vice President for the YMCA of Greater New York. He served on boards and was honored to have won several industry accolades and awards, but the most rewarding part for him was to foster the growth of his staff. A coach at heart, he took the time to help his colleagues discover their career paths, build skills, and plan for the future. He viewed them as family and was enormously proud of their successes. An equally rewarding aspect of his tenure was the lasting impact he made on the lives of thousands of children, especially through his work to establish scholarships for inner-city youth to experience the enriching world of camping.
In 1997, he retired and returned to Georgetown to begin the next chapter of his life. He enjoyed spending time with his beautiful wife, Pam, playing golf, traveling, and creating a backyard oasis, filled with flowers. He loved hosting family reunions and reconnecting with siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews, children and grandchildren. He cherished hosting Sunday family dinners and preparing grand holiday feasts that brought everyone together.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 50 years, Pamela Snowden; children: Jennifer Caiafa, Melissa Snowden, Rebecca Snowden, John D Snowden (Heather), and Ryan Snowden (Sara); sister Carra Elkins; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his loyal walking companion, Brewster.
John was preceded in death by his mother and father, Ruby and John Snowden; brothers Ben and Bill Snowden; and sister Norma Sutton.
Funeral arrangements will be handled by Ramsey Funeral Home in Georgetown, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to SCOPE to allow his camping legacy to live on and provide opportunities for children to go to camp.
