Obituary

SPC John Oral Meyer, U.S. Army Reserves, was born August 21, 1979, in Fairmont Minnesota.

He had four siblings and was the son of Sharon Meyer (nee Ricke) and Vernon Charles Meyer. Patriotic and dedicated, he graduated early from North Kossuth High School to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps in February of 1998 as an Assault Amphibious Vehicle Repairman. John was honorably discharged in 2002. John was a heroic man.  He married twice and raised a total of four children. Christopher (Meyer) step-son (age 19), Kaisen James Knippling (age 16), step-daughter Miravani Ruth Byerly (age 13), and Nora Owen Gunhammer (age 4).

John re-enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves as an Army Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic in 2018. He was a great Marine, Soldier, husband, father, brother, friend, and a true patriot. His awards include the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War On Terrorism Service Medal, Weapons Qualification Badge – Expert w/Rifle.

John passed away on November 16th, 2020, no longer in pain.

He is survived by his mother and siblings: Kevin, Marcy, Dodie and Nina; as well as his children and wife, Kitara Byerly-Meyer.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust, dav.org , or a local food bank.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 21st, 2020 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 218 Serenada Drive, Georgetown, Texas 78628. A military service with honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 22nd, 2020 at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery with full military honors rendered by the United States Marine Corps.

John will be laid to rest in a family cemetery in Swea City, Iowa.
