John Franklin
Garvish
March 7, 1940 – August 6, 2020
John Franklin Garvish M.D. passed away peacefully on August 6, 2020 in Lubbock, Texas surrounded by his loving wife, Gloria, and his children. He was 80 years old. His colleagues said that he read an X-ray four times faster than the average Radiologist. He was not only an accomplished Radiologist who saved thousands of lives during his long and fulfilling career as a physician, but he was also a successful entrepreneur, world traveler, decorated Air Force veteran, licensed private pilot, gourmet cook, car enthusiast and beloved husband, father and grandfather. He touched countless people with his generosity and kindness and was a mentor to many in the medical field. However, his proudest role by far was that of being a father and he was so very proud of his son and daughter and their many accomplishments. They shared a rich and very close relationship which brought him great joy.
Dr. Garvish lived life on his own terms. He was an adventure seeker who wanted to see the world and led his family on countless international expeditions. As a family, they got lost on the streets of Moscow in the Communist Soviet Union, skateboarded down the Great Wall of China, viewed the Pyramids in Egypt, went on safari in South Africa and floated in the Dead Sea as well as many other escapades that took them from Singapore to Sydney. He was a man of many unique talents. When he and his family lived in Indiana, he designed and built an exquisite, one of a kind custom home with exotic woods and lava rock which he installed himself on his off time.
The son of Hungarian immigrants, Dr. Garvish was born in Eldorado, Illinois on March 7, 1940 to "Alec" and Elizabeth Garvish. He beat all the odds and excelled as a student. He was admitted to medical school after only three years of college and was the first in his family to earn a post secondary degree. He attended the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical School and completed his medical residency and fellowship at Wilford Hall USAF Hospital at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
He met the love of his life, Gloria Maxine Hubbard, in San Antonio, Texas and they were married on October 19, 1968. They had two children both born in Carmichael, California. They lived all over the United States, but spent substantial time in Indiana and Texas. He fell in love with Texas during his residency training and later Texas became his forever home.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria and their children, Elizabeth and John and four grandchildren, Carson, Vivienne, Christian and Alexander. He was a devout Roman Catholic who shared his love of God and his faith with his family and friends and lived an exemplary life as a faithful servant of God. He was adored and beloved by so many and will be deeply missed.
