Obituary

Jerry Neal Boynton, age 88, passed away on Tuesday, July 16, 2024 in Georgetown, TX. He was born October 14, 1935 in Beaumont, TX to Elbert Wirt Boynton and Maude Mary Marioneaux Boynton. He graduated from South Park High School in 1952 where he was senior class president and went on to graduate from Lamar University. While in college, he worked at KTRM Radio as a DJ. During his first year attending The University of Texas School of Law, he worked for KVET Radio in Austin. Because of this, he decided to return to Beaumont to be Program Director at KTRM Radio. In 1960, he married Mary Hope Crow and they were blessed with four daughters. Jerry served his country in the Air National Guard and the Air Force Reserve for a total of six years.

While living in Beaumont, Jerry was involved in civic groups that allowed him to use his talents in public speaking. After giving a speech at The Beaumont Rotary Club, he was approached by the president of American National Bank and was asked to head their Public Relations Department. This led him to attend Northwestern, University of Chicago and the Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University.

In 1977, Jerry moved his family to Conroe, TX after accepting the position of President of Texas CommerceBank/Conroe. Two years later, Texas Commerce Bank promoted him to Senior Vice President in Houston, TX. He then commuted daily so his daughters could finish their schooling in Conroe. When not working, he enjoyed going to their beach house on the Boliver Peninsula with his family to relax and spend time together. After retirement from the bank, he joined a consulting firm in Houston as general manager and co-owner. Jerry loved working, but eventually had to accept retirement.

In 2000, he and Mary Hope moved to Sun City in Georgetown, TX where he became involved in many resident committees serving their community. His favorite was the Finance Committee where he was able to use his vast knowledge of banking. Many days, he and Mary Hope could be found with friends in the Hiking Club on the trails in Sun City and all over Texas. Because of his love for volunteering, Jerry served Grace Episcopal Church as lay reader, Vestry member and Lay Eucharistic Minister. The highlight of his Tuesday afternoon was volunteering in reception for the Georgetown Police Department. Jerry and Mary Hope loved to travel together. They explored Europe, Asia and South America. They discovered river cruising was their favorite way to see the world.

In 2022, they gave up their Sun City home and moved to Grand Living in Georgetown where they have made many friends. Jerry was able to regale everyone there with stories of his best friend from his time in radio broadcasting, J.P. Richardson aka The Big Bopper, a singer/songwriter famous for many songs including Chantilly Lace.

Jerry had many passions in his life but his greatest was the love for his family. Being Poppa to his seven grandchildren and welcoming his first great-grandchild was his greatest joys. Jerry was predeceased by his parents, his brother Sherrill E. Boynton, his sister Peggy Ruthe Trahan, and his grandson Matthew Tanner Merrill. Survivors include his wife Mary Hope, his daughters Karen Bates (Ken) of Beaverton, OR, Michele Robb (Curt) of Vancleave, MS, Colleen Merrill (Chris) of Austin, TX, Susan Lawson (Garret) of Lake Oswego, OR. Grandchildren Ryan Merrill (Mikaela) of Dripping Springs, TX, Jacob Merrill of Austin, TX, Graham Lawson and Meredith Lawson of Lake Oswego, OR, Hayden Robb and Carson Robb of Vancleave, MS, great-granddaughter Ember Merrill of Dripping Springs, TX, and many nieces and nephews.
