Obituary

Jeffrey Lance Foster

Beloved husband, father, son and friend, Jeff Foster, passed on October 28, 2021, after a long and brave fight against brain cancer. Though gone too soon, Jeff made the absolute most of his 58 years, living every day to the fullest.

Born on February 21, 1963 in Dallas, Texas, Jeff spent his younger years in Texas, California and Louisiana. He attended Clear Lake High School where he played football and went on to study at The University of Texas at Austin. As a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, he made life-long friends and memories in college. When it was time to hang up the toga, he went to work in the semiconductor industry for Technical Marketing, Inc., where he flourished for 30 years. Well known for his booming voice and gift of gab, he was the consummate salesman. His authenticity, charm and expert knowledge made him a favorite of his customers and brought him great success over the years. He retired from the industry in 2016 and founded Apex Shooting, turning his passion for shooting sports into a second career as a coach and target setter. His impact on his many students will be a living legacy and he was thrilled when they found success.

An avid outdoorsman, sportsman and athlete, Jeff spent untold hours enjoying his many passions. His grandfather taught him to shoot and ride motorcycles when he was a kid and he continued those pursuits for the rest of his life. Both the guns and the bikes got bigger and Italian but Jeff never lost his pure love for either. He was also a punishing mountain biker, as anyone who was foolish enough to ride with him found out. He both loved and hated golf with equal passion. He was an excellent fly fisherman and so appreciated and enjoyed the difficulty and beauty of the sport. In fact, that was the theme of Jeff's life. The more difficult, the better. He didn't just hunt with guns, he hunted with a bow for many years. And, not just any bow, but, of course, a recurve. And he didn't just hunt deer or rabbits with that recurve, he hunted bears and mountain lions. He loaded his own shells, tied his own flies and tinkered endlessly with his toys. You would never catch Jeff with anything but the best gear. He always said, "If you have a ten dollar head, you buy a ten dollar helmet." His pursuit of excellence in all things and his determination to reach the pinnacle of everything he did defined his character.

Jeff spent many hours helping others in every kind of situation both formally and informally. He served as President of the Texas Sporting Clays Association (TSCA) from 2006-2010. He also served as President of Capitol City Trap & Skeet Gun Club for many years. His enduring dedication to clay shooting resulted in his induction into the TSCA Hall of Fame in 2019. Informally, Jeff could be counted on to go above and beyond whatever assistance was asked of him. Countless friends and acquaintances were connected through Jeff's massive network. If you needed the best mountain bike, a gunsmith, some ammo, a custom boat, a job, a motorcycle part, a fishing guide … the list goes on and on … Jeff was the guy you called. You usually got more information than you wanted because he could turn a 5 minute call into an hour long discussion, but that ability is what made him a great salesman. His willingness to spend his time was a testament to how much he enjoyed helping others.

Jeff is survived by his wife, Christy; his two children, Jake and Jessie; his mother, Barbara Foster; his in-laws, Charlotte Dodwell, Steve and Karen Dodwell, and Brett and Traci Dodwell. He was preceded in death by his father, Deryl Foster.

The family would like to thank their many friends and relatives who were on Jeff's journey every step of the way. Each one was a lifeboat in a stormy sea and their love and support carried them to the shore. A special thanks also goes out to all the professional caregivers that helped along the way, especially the amazing staff at Rocky Hollow Lake House and Suncrest Hospice.

If you are so moved, please consider a donation to The Flatwater Foundation in Jeff's honor.
