Buz was raised in Georgetown Texas from an early age. In the fall of 1945 one pilot's misfortune would shape the trajectory of 8-year-old Buz's future forever. A pilot was forced to make an emergency landing west of Florence on Hwy 183. Buz's Dad was contacted to haul the airplane to Georgetown Airport. In lieu of payment for hauling the airplane the pilot offered an airplane ride for the entire Landry family. That flight was taken on the Grand opening day of the Georgetown airport, November 11, 1945. That was young Buz's first flight, and it was a life altering experience for him. From his first flight Buzz knew without question he would be a pilot one day.
Growing up, Buz spent countless hours at Georgetown Airport. W.H. Bill Shipp gave Buz a job at the airport when he was 13 years old. Buz worked as a "hanger boy" on the weekends and any time he was out of school. His pay was .50 cents per hour and 30 minutes of priceless flying time per week. It was during this time Buz grew his passion and love for flying. Buz took his first solo flight on January, 31st 1953, his 16th birthday. While in high school Buz built his first plane, a Luscombe 8A he named "LillyBelle" from two wrecked Luscombes.
Buz graduated from Georgetown High School in 1956.
After high school Buz started his career in 1958 with Western Flying Service as a pilot crop dusting in Pecos Texas. He then returned to Georgetown and started his own crop-dusting service. In 1960 he signed on as a corporate pilot with Tele Com Corporation until 1973 when he started Mid-Tex Industries, a pre-cast concrete company.
Buz Received the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award in May of 2015.
The Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award is the most prestigious award the FAA issues to pilots to recognize individuals who have exhibited exemplary aviation expertise, distinguished professionalism, and steadfast commitment for at least 50 years of piloting experience. He was President of the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) S.W. Regional Fly-in from 1972-1974 during the time the event was held in Georgetown. Buzz was a member of the International 180/185 Club and was the president from 1990-1994 and a southern director in 1994. He enjoyed spending time visiting with anyone who shared his passion for Cessna Skywagons. He was also a member of the the United Flying Octogenarians (UFO), an international group of pilots who have flown as a certificated Pilot in Command (PIC) on or after their 80th birthday, AOPA (Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association) and a member of the Secret Order of Quiet Birdmen. Buz was one of the most unique pilots there ever was. He could make an airplane talk to him like no other.
Buz was a proud Master Mason. Brother Landry served as Lodge Master, was a member of the Royal Arch Masonry and Royal & Select Masters for 62 years. Buzz was also a Shriner, "Knight Templar of the York Rite".
He was am member of the Crestview Baptist Church in Georgetown, Texas.
Buz was known around town by many as "Mr. Georgetown".
Buz's loves were his children, airplanes and motorcycles. He cherished his friends. If someone was in need, he would stop what he was doing to help however he could.
