Obituary

George "Louis" McCorkle
1937–2025

Born: November 9, 1937 • Woodbine, Cooke County, Texas
Death: February 26, 2025 • Georgetown, Williamson County, Texas

Louis McCorkle, lovingly known as GL or Corky, was the third child to Clay and Irene McCorkle of Collinsville, Texas. He was preceded in death by his older brothers, Wayne and Gene McCorkle, and his younger sisters, Shirley Half and Gayle Voyles. Louis is survived by his youngest sibling, Joann Taylor.

Louis was married to Carolyn Kay Mosse McCorkle for 66 years, until her passing in December 2023. Together, they raised six children, 18 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren, and soon to be one great-great-grandchild.

His children include: Randall McCorkle and his partner, Glenda Blanton, Karen Mersiovsky, Brian and wife, Anna James McCorkle, Kelly and husband, Jim Taylor, Brandy and husband, Eric Crumley, and daughter Crickett McCorkle.

Louis also cherished his foster children: Kris Mersiovsky, Derrik Mersiovsky, and wife, Hillary, Heidi Bane and husband, Cody.

He was a proud grandfather to many, including: Cori McCorkle, Joe Mayberry and wife, Rachel, Jon McCorkle, Travis McCorkle and wife, Libby, Trevor Taylor, Markie Taylor, Emeri Crumley, Reece Crumley, Talon Crumley, Ranger Crumley, Rory Crumley, Baily Bonnet, Ryleigh Hummel, Camryn Hummel, and Peyton Hummel. He also leaves behind his 18 great-grandchildren, with one great-great-grandchild soon to be born.

Louis was preceded in death by his wife, Kay McCorkle, and granddaughters Trinity Hummel and Delli Bonnet.

Louis had a big heart and a contagious laugh. While not a man of many words, if you ever sat with him in his garden or on the porch, you'd learn about the simple life he cherished. He was hard-working and often found tinkering in his shed or retreating to his beloved backyard, which was his peaceful escape from the busy household. Louis often joked that his love of the outdoors was what helped his marriage last through the decades.

There wasn't anything Louis couldn't fix with a nail, hammer, or screwdriver. He always believed nothing was truly broken—whether it was an object or a person. Louis and Kay opened their home to children, grandchildren, their friends, and friends of friends, providing a safe place to rest and a house full of love. He had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel special. Although he may not have remembered names, he had unique nicknames and numbers for everyone he cared about.

Louis married Kay after just six weeks of knowing her, on June 29, 1957. He worked for IBM plant in Sherman, Texas, before being transferred to the Austin plant, where he and Kay built their home in Georgetown.

When he wasn't in his backyard, Louis was often attending games to watch his beloved Dallas Cowboys. From 1978-2008, he and Kay held front-row tickets to the stadium, enjoying games with his brother Wayne and his wife, Shirley.

Louis also spent many years coaching youth sports and refereeing high school football games. His passions included square dancing, two-stepping, water skiing, hunting, and fishing.

Louis was a man who never gave up. In his later years, he battled several illnesses, including prostate, bladder, and colon cancer. Tough as ever, he maintained his playful sense of humor even as his body began to shut down. He left this world on his own terms.

Louis (Dad, Grandpa) will be deeply missed by his many nephews, nieces, and countless others who considered him family. His passing has created a void that will never be filled. We are grateful that he is now reunited with his beloved Carolyn Kay, where together, they will be cheering on the Cowboys for next year's Super Bowl.
