He was born on August 13, 1943, in Stamford, Texas, to parents Don T. and Betty Martin. He was joined four years later by sister Nancy Jo. He grew up in Hereford, Texas, graduating from Hereford High School in 1962. He received a B.S. in Education from Southwestern State College in Weatherford, Oklahoma, class of 1966, and earned his Master of Education degree from Tarleton State University in 1975. Fred coached for a number of school districts in Texas, including Belton, Dawson, Hillsboro, Leon, Olton, Killeen, Bastrop, and Taylor. A highlight of his career was being named 1972 Coach of the Year by the Waco Tribune-Herald newspaper. Fred enjoyed outdoor sports and was an avid bass fisherman, wild turkey and deer hunter. He also enjoyed pheasant and quail hunting and belonged to the Central Texas Knife Collectors' Club.
