Obituary

Eunice Gage Coon, 98, of Georgetown, Texas, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2026 surrounded by her loving family.

Born on November 26, 1927, in Hoisington, Kansas, Eunice was the last surviving member of a family of farmers who had migrated to the region in the late 1800's. She grew up amid the prairie lands and farmland. In 1945, as World War II concluded, she graduated from high school and married her high school sweetheart, Virgil Wyvas Coon. Their lifelong partnership began that year and lasted over six decades until Virgil's passing in 2006.

The young couple started their family while traveling throughout the oil fields of the Rio Grande Valley in south Texas, embracing a nomadic life filled with lots of new experiences. They eventually settled in Lafayette, Louisiana, where they continued raising their two children, Cheryll Sue and Steven Wayne, for the next 15 years. During this time, Eunice was socially active and served as president of the Women's Geological Auxiliary in the late 1960's, actively supporting the geological community and demonstrating her leadership and community spirit. She also learned to fly single engine aircraft.

In 1971, Eunice and Virgil moved to Houston, Texas, where they resided for 33 years, building deep roots and cherished memories. They later relocated to Leawood, Kansas, for 12 years. After Virgil's death, she was an active member of the DAR, Daughters of the American Revolution, RGL Chapter. Additionally, she was an active member of Neighborhood 81 Book Club and Bible Study.

Eunice embodied the devoted wife, mother and homemaker of the 1950's and 1960's "nuclear family" era. She created a warm, faith-centered home nurturing her children with grace, kindness, and steadfast support while prioritizing family, church and simple joys. A woman of deep faith, she remained a dedicated church member throughout her life, finding strength and purpose in worship and service.

In her later years, Eunice discovered and embraced her creative side. She was an avid genealogist traveling extensively researching the Coon and Gage family histories. She then wrote and published her memoirs, preserving the rich stories of her long life -- from prairie roots and Depression-era perseverance to the optimism of post-war years and family travels. At the remarkable age of 98 she wrote the song "Goin' Camping" which her grandson David Coon set to music -- a joyful testament to her enduring spirit and love of life's adventures.

She is survived by her son, Steven Coon (Linda) of Georgetown, Texas, her daughter, Cheryll Coon-Riley, also of Georgetown, Texas. Grandchildren are Jeffrey Townsley (Amber) of Hutto, Texas, Lyndsie Coon and Kevin Coon (Lauren) of Kansas City Missouri; David Coon

(Brooke) of Brasilito, Costa Rica; her great-grandchildren are Karissa Townsley McAdams, Emma Coon, Benjamin Coon, and Jason Coon. Her great-great grandson is Jaxon McAdams.

In lieu of flowers, Eunice requested memorial contributions be made to the Sjogren's Foundation (Sjogrens.org) supporting research and awareness of this autoimmune disease.

A memorial service will be held at The Worship Place, Georgetown, Texas, on April 2, 2026, at 2:00pm.
