Espirio Jose
Puga
July 20, 1959 – December 29, 2025
Espirio "Speedy" Jose Puga passed away on December 29, 2025 at the age of 66, surrounded by his family. He will be remembered as a brother, uncle, godfather, cousin, mentor and a friend. Speedy was born on July 20, 1959 in Lubbock, Texas and grew up between Florence and Sweetwater, as well as periods traveling long distances with his parents and sister working crop during different seasons and being instilled with a spirit of hard work and dedication to family and faith.
In school, he took part in sports and enjoyed running like the wind--embracing his nickname Speedy. This love of sports also led to a lifelong love for all things Dallas Cowboys, Texas Longhorns Florence Buffaloes. Following high school, Speedy spent a dedicated career in the Texas Department of Transportation, maintaining the highways, farm-to-market roads and ranch-to-market roads of northern and central Williamson County. Over the years he rose to Assistant Supervisor and inspector of contractors that the State of Texas hired to perform specific tasks. Contractors across the state knew they had to be on the A-game when working with "that inspector from Georgetown." He was not only known as expecting and inspiring hard work from others but known for kindness when helping stranded motorists on the highway, with one Thanksgiving traveler writing a letter to then-Governor Bush celebrating the help that speedy offered during a stressful time.
Although he did not have children of his own, he poured his heart and soul into his nephews, Scotty and Ray. Attending as many football, baseball and basketball games, as well as other sporting events, band concerts and other school functions for the boys. While being very dedicated to work, he did enjoy the occasional trip out of town, with trips throughout Texas, Orlando and the Grand Canyon being some highlights. Another focus was his journey in his faith, being a lifelong parishioner of Santa Rosa Catholic Church, with highs and lows as we all deal with, but ultimately finding our way to God. Friends and family are comforted by knowing that at the end of 2025,Speedy was embraced by Christ and reunited with loved ones while being welcomed into Heaven.
Speedy is survived by his sister Irene Puga Skidmore and her husband Clayton, and nephews Scott Jose Skidmore and Ray Fidel Skidmore. He also leaves behind numerous friends and family whose hearts he touched over the years and who will remember him in the joyful laughs shared with him over his lifetime.
Preceding Speedy in death are his parents Espiridion Fidel Puga and Manuelita Vasquez Puga, many cousins, aunts, uncles and friends who were there in Heaven to welcome him home.
