Dr. Eric Ernest Smith, age 93, of Georgetown, Texas passed away on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 in Georgetown, Texas. Eric was born on January 2,1931in Birkenhead, England to Ernest and Nancy (Jones) Smith. In his 20s, he served in the Royal Air Force. After he completed his service, he furthered his education and ultimately received his PhD in Biochemistry at the University of London. Then, he married a fellow biochemist, Dr. Zeenat Gunja-Smith, on January 6,1961. They moved to Miami, Florida in 1967 where he worked for the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine as a Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology until his retirement in the late 1990s. In 2001, after residing in South Miami for 34 years, he and his wife moved to Sun City, Georgetown, Texas to be closer to their daughter and granddaughter. He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Dr. Zeenat Gunja-Smith, as well as his brothers and sister, Ronald, Joy, Robert and Victor-all from England. Survivors include his daughter, Dr. Laurette Smith of Leander, Texas and granddaughter, Sonali Dayal of Austin, Texas. Per his wishes, there will be no visitation or memorial service.
