Eleanor Lorraine
Juhl
January 19, 1924 – March 14, 2024
Eleanor "Lynn" Juhl spent her last days surrounded by her children and their prayers, and passed away on March 14, 2024 at age 100, after her heart faltered the last month of her life. Lynn was born in Detroit MI on January 19, 1924 to Helen and Michael Skladanek, and was raised in Milwaukee WI with her younger brother John. Born during the Great Depression, Lynn's family endured the hardships of poverty, at times even lacking coal to heat their home during frigid WI winters and owning only one dress during four years of high school; she learned to find joy and create celebrations with very few material resources. Lynn always thrived in school, and even early in life she was convinced that education was the essential key to overcoming most hardships.
Lynn entered Marquette University in 1941, where she worked scrubbing floors and other jobs to pay her tuition. Although she often could not afford to buy textbooks for her courses, she managed to earn her Bachelors degree in 1944. She then joined the Marine Corps to help fill jobs vacated by troops sent to fight in WWII. A year after the war ended, Lynn began working toward an MA in psychiatric social work at Catholic University of America in Washington DC; during that year she met Rolf Juhl, married him in early 1948, and they started a family. Rolf and Lynn were married for 61 years until his death. Lynn and Rolf moved 28 times together, including to Seattle WA, Pascagoula-Moss Point MS (three times), San Diego and Torrance CA, four cities in Puerto Rico, Alexandria VA, Mexico City, St. Petersburg FL, and then retired in Moss Point MS, where Lynn felt was "home." Finally, Lynn and Rolf moved to Georgetown TX, closer to their children, and after Rolf passed away, Lynn joined the Wesleyan community at Estrella's Independent Living when she was 86, and then Estrella's Assisted Living just after she turned 99. She absolutely loved, and thrived, living "at Estrella."
In addition to her unflagging devotion to her husband and her four children, Lynn worked in the field of education—which had enriched her life immeasurably—her entire career. She taught at several elementary schools, and spearheaded opening two elementary English-language schools, including the Caribbean School in Ponce PR, with fundraising, curriculum development and teaching. She taught and served as vice-principal at Academia San Jose HS in Villa Caparra PR, and at the college level (in English) at the Universidad Ibericoamericana in Mexico City. At age 50 she finally achieved a long-term goal: earning an MA, in Counseling. Lynn had eventually taught at every grade level during her career—from kindergarten through graduate school. In addition, she worked as a counselor for Moss Point HS, and for students in St. Petersburg FL elementary schools. She finished her career teaching and coaching displaced women in a Returning to Work program at MS Gulf Coast CC in Gautier MS before she retired.
At retirement Lynn volunteered over 1000 hours at Singing River Hospital's Auxiliary program as a "Pink Lady" in Pascagoula. She also helped others begin their faith journeys into RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Moss Point. Despite always living frugally herself, she was exceptionally generous, and readily shared her material possessions, encouraging words, and prayers.
Lynn loved her country and passionately promoted democratic ideals throughout her life. She was proud to have served as a "Bulldog status" corporal in the Women's Marine Corps during WWII, and was thrilled to be able to participate in an Honor Flight to Washington DC as a representative honoring TX WWII veterans when she was 91.
Along with the bounty of her deep and enduring friendships, Lynn's family and her abiding confidence in the Lord provided her with purpose, strength, and great comfort. Lynn and Rolf often gathered friends to dinners and parties at their home—where she loved lively discussions about "big ideas." Lynn loved to laugh, and to make others laugh (she carried a list of favorite jokes in her wallet along with a list of her medications and a photo of her children). Rolf's nickname for Lynn was "Happy Girl." She was an avid bridge player until age 99, and although some of her memory finally faded as she moved to Assisted Living, her deep faith, her generosity, and her love for her family and friends never dimmed. Lynn had steadfast confidence that once her physical life on Earth was over, she would pass into the Loving arms of Our Lord—the beginning of an eternal, and beautiful new journey for her.
Lynn's parents and younger brother John preceded her in death, as did her husband Rolf, eldest daughter Dana Juhl, and sisters-in-law Irma Holzmann and Jean Skladanek, niece Tessa Skaldanek, and nephew Peter Skladanek. Lynn is survived by three of her four children: daughter Vanessa Noya (husband Roberto Noya), daughter Melani Juhl-Chandler (husband Daniel Chandler), son Cory Juhl (wife Lynn Juhl). She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Marco Noya, Carlos Noya, Miguel Noya, Erin Chandler, Hannah Chandler, Morgan Juhl, and Noah Juhl, and by two great grandchildren Roberto "Tommy" Noya, and Alice Chandler-Taylor; and nieces Gabrielle Holzmann, Mary Skladanek, and Jennifer Skladanek and nephews George Holzmann, Paul Skladanek, John Skladanek, and Christopher Skladanek.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 29th, 2024 at St Helen's Catholic Church in Georgetown, TX with her extended family and friends to celebrate her life. She will be laid to rest at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen TX, next to Rolf.
