Obituary

Douglas Michael Bryce was born on September 25th, 1941 in Detroit, Michigan to Scottishborn
immigrant Alec Gilbert Bryce and Mayflower descendant Josephine Mary Bryce. Doug
attended Catholic School, and grew up loving cars and music. He formed a band with his
brothers known as "3 of the 4", and played in their basement, dubbed the "Blue Room House
of Music" by neighbors and friends. Doug was a talented guitarist and singer, and was even
offered an opportunity with Motown in the Motor City, which he ultimately turned down. He
was a champion pool player and bowler, scoring a perfect 300 at one point! On occasion,
however, his wife Linda was known to have bested him at pool (that's how one version of the
story goes anyway).

Doug attended the Detroit College of Applied Arts and Sciences, where he got his start in
plastic injection molding. His first job was at Duralastic Products in Detroit, which lead to a lifelong
and highly successful career as a globally-known plastics engineer.
Doug married the love of his life, Linda Carole Bernstein on February 27th, 1965 during the
worst blizzard in 50 years in Detroit. They spent their honeymoon at Morgan's Lounge so that
Doug's band could keep his commitment to play their set that weekend.

In the early years of their marriage, Doug and Linda spent time playing music in many
establishments, and developed some life-long friendships. They would sometimes jump in the
car and drive to Chicago or other destinations on spontaneous adventures.

On May 15th,1972, Doug and Linda gave birth to their first child, Melanie Erica on the Monday
after Mother's Day. Linda always joked with Doug that he got to be a father longer than she
was a mother. Melanie's birth was followed by April Heather on April 30th,1974, Victoria Ann on
August 19th,1976, and his only son Christopher Michael on September 25th, 1979 - the
ultimate birthday gift!

Doug loved taking his young family on adventures - LOTS of camping trips, fishing expeditions,
and beach excursions. Singing, dancing, and guitar playing were regular occurrences in the
Bryce home - it was anything but quiet. And Doug loved every minute of it.

In 1984, Doug accepted an offer for a prominent position with IBM in Texas as a research
engineer. He fell in love with the Lone Star State, and often quipped: "I wasn't born in Texas,
but I got here as fast as I could." Doug loved all things Texas: cowboy boots, arrowheads, bolo
ties, BBQ, jalapeños, wildflowers, and the incredible Texas sunsets.

Doug's engineering and inventive mind lead him to develop the use of Aluminum Injection
Molding as an alternative to steel molds. This advancement in manufacturing was quickly
recognized as such a significant time and cost savings measure, that it became adopted
worldwide as an industry standard for injection molding. This achievement resulted in his
making the cover of Plastics World Magazine in January of 1992. It was during this time that
Doug was invited to speak as a regular subject matter expert for the Society of Manufacturing
Engineers. The SME sent Doug all over the world to tour manufacturing plants, teach seminars,
and consult with clients. The SME published three of his books, which all made it into the
Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Doug often stated: "When it comes to Plastic Injection
Molding, I literally wrote the book."

In 1992, Doug left IBM to start his own business, Texas Plastic Technologies. His independent
consulting career thrived, and he became a highly sought after expert in the global
manufacturing arena. His long list of clients included, but was not limited to: IBM, Gillette,
Kodak, General Motors, Ford, Estée Lauder, and Nike. Doug even contributed to the
production of the 1968 Shelby Ford Mustang!

Doug believed in the importance of serving others, which started at home. He cherished his
wife Linda, and sought to take care of her and protect her every day for more than 59 years. He
worked hard to provide for his family, and taught them each the value of a hard and honest
day's work. He volunteered his time as a musician by singing and playing guitar with his son
Chris as "The Bryce Boys," often visiting nursing homes and schools to perform for Christmas,
Valentines' Day, Father's Day, and "just because." Doug also taught a creative writing class at
the Williamson County Juvenile Justice Center. His work in the program offered troubled youth
an alternative to deviant behavior through artistic expression.

In addition to his authorship of technical books, Doug also wrote many articles, blog posts, and
books, including The Wisdom of Grandad, Grandad's Joke Book, and Gardening With
Grandad.

Doug was fascinated with past civilizations, UFO's, dinosaurs, and anything that grows. Doug
was recognized as a Master Gardener by his family. His daughter Melanie often joked with him
that if he ate a salad outside, a few seeds from his plate would drop to the ground and up
would sprout tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, and snap peas. He loved tending his greenhouse
and garden, and was quick to share the fruit of his labor.

Doug's kids and grandkids knew him as the man who could fix anything. His hearty laugh and
resonant voice were a delight to all who knew him, and family celebrations often included
ample time for playing guitar and singing.

In December of 2023, Doug was informed by his medical care team that he had a rare and
aggressive cancer. His strong Scottish body and resolute spirit embarked on the battle against
it, with the support of his family and doctors. Doug had always believed in God, and wanted to
know more about Him and His purpose in Doug's life. During his cancer journey, when his
ability to tend to his garden and trim trees with chainsaws became out of reach, Doug spent
much of his time in meditation and thought. He grew closer to the Lord during this season and
found solace in Scripture, prayer, and reflection on his identity in Christ.

On February 11, 2024, Doug chose to proclaim his faith by being baptized at Bannockburn
Church in Austin, Texas. His public profession inspired multiple people in attendance to begin
their own journeys to seek to know Jesus the way that Doug did.

In July of 2024, complications with Doug's treatment triggered an attack on his body from
within. This assault ultimately became too much for even his strong body to bear.

On Saturday, October 5th, 2024, Doug's wife Linda, chose to be baptized as well. Doug said
that was one of the happiest days of his life - his joy was now complete.

On Friday, October 11th, 2024, Doug departed for his heavenly home to be welcomed by his
Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and to receive his new, pain-free body. Doug spent his last days
in his Texas home of 40 years, surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren who spent
the day telling stories, sharing memories, praying, and of course, playing guitar and singing…
